A rubber shortage is coming...

LINK: What the impending rubber ‘apocalypse’ means for the U.S. economy
Rubber is a critical raw material needed for car tires, personal protective equipment such as masks and gloves, and many more everyday products. Anytime you’re going anywhere, you’re using rubber. Now, supply chain disruptions have thrown the rubber industry into a tailspin.
Time to stock up on any rubber made products you may need. Tires are the main one (replace them if you need to) but also anything containing rubber. The problem is being compounded by the cost of shipping containers and the shortage of them.

What The Rubber ‘Apocalypse’ Means For The U.S. Economy

Published on 9 Jul 2021
The global economy now faces a rubber shortage because of multiple supply chain disruptions. "We could be on the cusp of a rubber apocalypse," Ohio State University professor Katrina Cornish told CNBC. Rubber producers are working against all odds: climate change, disease and the fight for shipping containers. The global rubber market was valued at nearly $40 billion in 2020, but one analysis predicts the natural rubber market could be worth nearly $68.5 billion by 2026.

First Lumber, now Rubber... What's the next commodity that we are going to be paying thru the nose for 'because of Covid'?

My prediction is that it will never be toilet paper ironically. Toiler paper supply will be constant but keep fluxuating because people are trying to anticipate a shortage that will never come

Lol, where have you been ?

TP made the news about 2 months ago … cuz of the high cost / shortage of wood pulp
Price of TP will increase …
And if there’s a run on TP, PT, Kleenex etc …
Then for sure there could be shortages

Crap, I just dumped my old tires at a Costco parking lot. I should have kept them to sell.

I think only condoms and latex gloves are made of natural rubber. No way tires are natural rubber. It looks like the doom is overblown.

"Today tires consist of about 19 percent natural rubber and 24 percent synthetic rubber, which is a plastic polymer. The rest is made up of metal and other compounds"

Yeah, the percent of natural rubber varies depending on the site I look at but I am surprised it is even there. Maybe it was cheap to add it to synthetic rubber which has better controlled properties. Perhaps this rubber apocalypse will be a good reason to switch to fully synthetic composition. BTW, natural rubber is also a plastic polymer.

Maybe we will have to revert back to wooden wheels, at least then it would be bio-degradable.

Snippy time!
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

I'm no recycling expert, but overall if society doesn't get their crap together, we're going to have shortages in all sorts of materials in the coming years. So much waste just going straight to the dump.

People dump tires in ditches because they don't want to pay the $4 eco fee or can't be bothered to drive to an eco station in the first place.

Funny how places were all starting to ban straws, cups, etc and then covid hits and then we're all back to single use packaged items again. There's got to be a balance between convivence and safety that needs to be sorted out.
