Ryzen 1000 series in a B550 board? Will this combo work?

I am building a PC for my mom, her PC just died.

Can I put a Ryzen 1600X in a B550 motherboard if I have AGESA 1.0.8.0 A in BIOS?

I have a Asus Prime b550m-a/csm. BIOS files here: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/CSM/PRIME-B550M-A-CSM/HelpDesk_BIOS/

According to googling I found these links saying AGESA 1.0.8.0 A allowed for older Ryzen Zen 1 and Zen 1 + support.

You can try. The board you have is not validated to compatible with Ryzen 5 1600X

The Pro B550M-C is validated and TUF GAMING B550-PRO is on the CPU support list

Interesting finding, so is it an " Off label" thing with AGESA 1.0.8.0 ? I've got a MSI B550M Pro-VD thats just sitting around, would be nice if i can get it to work with a 2nd Gen Ryzen.

Hmmm further digging from that Reddit post points to this twittter post from a japanese source ? Looks like the guy tried on a few boards? hit or miss depending on model.

Vendors can trim or add support to chips from AGESA by taking out tables from it. You'll need to test to be sure but looking at the docs officially it's 3000 series and up.

That said, there's a very good chance a 1000 series should work in it.

I have B350 board I'd trade you for your B550.

I just did the switch today and it works!

For ASUS PRIME B550M-A/CSM mATX motherboard, I updated the BIOS to
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards-Components/Motherboards/CSM/PRIME-B550M-A-CSM/HelpDesk_BIOS/

Version 1004
2020/08/17 18.38 MBytes
PRIME B550M-A BIOS 1004
"Improve system performance and stability
Improve Fan control function
Improve DRAM stability
Update AM4 AGESA combo V2 PI 1.0.8.0
Improve system stability
Improve DRAM performance"

Installed a first gen (1st) AMD Ryzen 5 1600X CPU and I see 6cores/12threads in Windows 10.
Previously I was using a AMD Ryzen 3 3100 CPU in it.

It rebooted twice and it reset the BIOS. I had to change back Virtual Machine support and was good to go so far.

I am typing this message on it.

Why would you want to use an older chip when you have a Ryzen 3 3100? Did the 3100 fail?
Nothing to see here...keep looking.

I give mom Ryzen 3100 and some B450 board ITX and some GPU.

I will be temporarily using the Ryzen 1600X
It is slower on single thread by like 10-13% but those extra cores make multitasking smoother I feel.

I will upgrade 1600x later.
