Very good pricing but I think Galaxy A only get 1 major OS update.

Still A71 is a pretty compelling product, especially in Canada where mid-range options are pretty limited.

SD730
Large 6.7" OLED display Ok Hand Sign
6GB RAM/128GB storage
3.5mm jack
4500mah battery
Triple camera, but the picture quality is not that good

Compare with upcoming Pixel 4a, likely $400 USD/600 CAD launch price.

5.8" OLED display
6GB RAM/64GB storage
3.5mm jack
Single camera but very good quality Ok Hand Sign
3 years of software support

A51 has the performance of a Note 5 which is around 5 years old.
A71 has the performance of a Note 9, which seems to be the much better deal.

Reviews I've seen of the A71 say it's a good phone as a whole just a little cheap feeling

I watched a speed test between the $250 Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro and the A51. The Note 8 Pro is miles faster and much cheaper

Do you get frustrated when there are milliseconds of delay when opening apps? If you do then get a S20.
Anything slower than a SDM855 (S10/N10) will have delays.

Personally, I get frustrated. I never game on my phones but I just can't stand lag in anything.

I will start off by saying that I am a samsung user (s10+ currently). I am surprised by the $600 price point on the A71 as this is the same price as apple's new SE. I know that the SE has a tiny screen but the insides of the SE should be very snappy. I think that samsung will need to drop the price of this A71 to at least $500 so they can have a bit of separation between this phone and Apple SE. Just my opinion but I would wait before purchasing this phone. Most likely these will appear on craigslist for around $400-$450 new in box very soon as well.

I purchased the A71 on April 17. Shipped today to Vancouver. Will arrive tomorrow.

I went with this over the S20 as I'm an "average" user. The price difference between A70 and the S20 is $421.72 (including 12% BC taxes). I was using an S7 until it had a hardware failure (using it for 3 years, 4 months).
  • The screen isn't as good as the S20 and the bezel is a little ugly but for the price difference I'm not bothered :)
  • No IP68 rating but if you watch water dunk tests on the A70, the phone holds up well. Not that you'd ever do that. If you use your phone in the shower then I guess get the S20. I'm pretty careful with my phones anyways.
  • Single speaker is a bummer but it isn't bad. I'm usually using headphones anyways.
  • Not having top of the line snapdragon is fine for me. I use Reddit, RFD, Maps, web browser and youtube on my phone. I don't game. The processor is decent for what I do. If you're a gamer on a budget this may work for you. If you're not on a budget obviously get the S20.
  • The S7 I was using was still usable except Google Maps which was a little laggy. Pretty sure the A71 will do just fine.
It was hard persuading myself getting a mid-tier phone because of course everyone wants the best. But pocketing $421 and probably not going to notice the difference between this and the S20 is probably my best bet. I was hoping to get an S10 for a little more but I'm too worried buying off of Craigslist. I tried Amazon's warehouse deals. I got an S10 for $750 all in (which wasn't really worth it. Just put up $200 more and get the S20). Problem with buying used is all warranty is void, which is why I returned it. Buying the A71 on my credit card means I get my credit card insurance + Samsung's 1 year warranty.

Also I'm pretty sure this device will be getting 2 years of updates.

I'll be receiving my phone tomorrow. I'll be testing it out to see if I want to keep it.

Let me know if you have any questions. I did a lot of research prior to buying. Not a phone expert by any means though so hopefully others can chime in.

I'm surprised everyone mostly cares about how fast, camera performance and physical built of these midrange. The best quality of the a51 and a71 is the battery life which hands down can probably get most people 2days before charging compare to the flagships.

I have 2 a70s for about a year now and they are pretty snappy but battery life is king compare to my note 10+ and op7pro.

Ofcourse my pet peeves about them are the software glitches that will probably never get fix since day 1 and the camera is pretty poopoo but meh as a backup phone for gps great.

It'll probably get really cheap soon.

I have a Perkopolis account but I keep getting a link expired message when I try to use their Samsung promo. How'd you get it to work? At $479.99 the A71 is pretty appealing.
