Or you could just buy an an NVMe SSD for $70 and an enclosure and have a smaller, faster external drive. Or buy a regular 2.5" 1 TB drive and enclosure for around the same $.

Not necessarily. NVMe enclosures are more expensive than the SATA enclosures. I recently purchased a Lexar NVME SSD 480 GB from Canada computers for $70 and most enclosures were at least $30-40. So $105 is a decent deal if you don’t want to make your own.

This enclosure is already very small. People interested in this deal are likely looking for a combined solution and not necessarily the cheapest option. Also, many third-party enclosures are junk. Every time this deal is posted, someone comes in and states the same thing. Thank you, but we get it; you can go cheaper by buying part of the solution third-party or separate. Not everyone wants that.

It's internally an mSATA drive so really either connector is going to get you to the drive's internal interface peak of about 500 - 550 MB/s.

Also, don't forget many small files will write much smaller, and you're limited by the slowest drive in the chain so it's great for SSD > SSD transfers but HDD > SSD transfers will still be in the 100-150 MB/s range to peak generally.

Most nvme enclosures are SATA speed so think about that before buying an nvme for external use.
