This enclosure is already very small. People interested in this deal are likely looking for a combined solution and not necessarily the cheapest option. Also, many third-party enclosures are junk. Every time this deal is posted, someone comes in and states the same thing. Thank you, but we get it; you can go cheaper by buying part of the solution third-party or separate. Not everyone wants that.
This is RFD. Of courseeeeeeeeeeeeeee someone states that it can be had cheaper, that's why we're here. :-)

On Amazon, it says a month for shipping. Crazy.

But you'd be able to get much better read/write speeds with a drive+enclosure compared to this.
PCIe enclosures are selling around $50, ranging $40-$80 on amazon, and pretty much all are unknown brands, claiming to transfer at a bit over 900mb/s(less than 2 times of this SATA). IMO it is not worth the effort and extra cost to DIY and give up the reliability on the factory build for the “much” better speed. But it would be fun to build one and you can swap the ssd if you have multiple. that’s just a different story.

Not sure where you are getting your info.

whats the actual write/copy speed with this using a fairly new laptop with USB3 ports? Let say I have a bunch of pics from SD card to transfer to it from another USB3 reader.

In that scenario, you would be limited to the SD card reading speed.
Thanks! How about from SSD internal drive to T5? Guessing depends on SSD?

Exactly, as fast as your slowest component, until you reach the writing speed of the T5.
Check the customer images on for the T5. Some report in the mid-400 MBps writing speeds for the T5.

I know some people can't be bothered to install an SSD into an enclosure but I'm gonna post it anyways as an alternative.

SSD: ... _id=139195 ... 5780400000

$98/$108 total with up to twice the transfer speeds depending on your USB ports and a smaller package compared to the T5.
