Saw this at a friend's house basement

Does anyone know what is it, and the purpose of having this installed by the previous home owner?

I've never had one myself but I'd say that's probably a sump pump.

If you are referring to the round disc on the floor, with the vertical pipe coming out of it, I would say that is the cover of a sump pit, with the motor of the column sump pump visible, and the discharge pipe is the vertical pipe with the elbows.

Its sole purpose is to dewater the basement slab or base to prevent flooding of the basement.

You will find only homes at real risk of water intrusion in the basement are equipped with them.

As far as I can remember Sump Pumps have been mandated by the Ontario Building Code since 2017 I think.

It's a sump pump. It was put in by the builder for houses that are in an area with high water tables.

I really hope you aren't from Ontario, if you are I hope your handyman knowledge is not put into practice in other people's homes.

You probably couldn't afford me.

The vast majority of homes built in Ontario have been built without sump pits / sump pumps

The fact that they were made mandatory in 2017 has little bearing on my reply, or whether I do a fantastic job on the things I do for other people.

This is news to me - is this the case in the GTA? I’ve never had a house with a sump pump including my new construction built in 2021.. same goes for much of my family that have multiple homes built after 2017, none of which have one.

I googled it and do see references to it being mandatory since 2017 but then do see some articles making reference to grade.

What are some of the exemptions that could apply that could have resulted in not having one?

Sump pumps aren't mandated ... it's just you can't run your foundation/storm drains into a sanitary sewer as per the OBC with a few exceptions.

Our new construction with a walkout has TWO of these puppies Disappointed Face. One in the front of the basement and one in the back. Does anyone have pictures or ideas of their basement finished with these involved.

My house finished in June 2000 has one. We live on the highest point between London and Hamilton in Southwestern Ontario (there is a plaque) with a serious drop to the river roughly 450 meters in one direction and a substantial drop to the west about 800 meters in the other direction. It has never ever run except when I test it once or twice per year to make sure it would run if needed.

The only reason I can think they put it in is that our backyard Neighbours are all walkouts so all their roof water flows past our house to our road. They are the highest tier, and then our across the street Neighbours also have walk outs while we do not. Our house is only in the ground about 4 feet on one side and 3 feet on the other.

We just finished our basement and decided not to hide it. We just made it part of a storage room. I know you have two of them, but you could consider making them part of storage rooms. closets or pantries.

If not, then there are tons of ideas on those links for concealing them. Just make sure you leave yourself access room to fix/replace them when they wear out.

if you have kids, you can just pop the lid and throw some rubber duckies in the pit and turn it into a toy. (please don't do this)

Is that 10amp charger connected to a battery that can run the sump pump in case of power outage?

London, On
I'm surprised they aren't mandatory Ontario wide. I'm in London and my first 2 homes were newbuilds in 1996 and 2002 and they both had them, and then our current home built in 1986 also has one. We are moving to Woodstock next month and the 2009 build there also has one.
