Scotiabank " BALANCE TRANSFER FEE" 3% !!!

Main Credit card is Visa with Scotiabank. I have a second Credit card - HBC - Capital One - occasional use
The HBC card , I was paying the balance in full; cash, in person at the Bay . A nuisance. For over a year , I have paid off the HBC card online from my Scotiabank account.

Last week , I paid the HBC cc statement - $280 - Scotiabank has tacked on this new outrageous fee. of $8.40 !!! My Scotiabank balance is over $5,000.

Yep, 3% is printed black and white in the terms and conditions. What else did you expect?

OP says that he made an online Bill Payment from his Scotiabank chequing/savings account for the balance on his HBC card.

The same way he has done every month for the past year.

The only way there could have been a 3% charge is if he inadvertently selected the Transfer tab instead of the Pay Bills tab.

Or did their system somehow redirect it as Transfer for an unknown reason?

So you paid off a credit card with a balance transfer from another credit card? Of course you paid a 3% fee. You'll be paying interest charges too. You should have used the Bill Pay function from your chequing account.

He didn't say that. It sounds like he used his Scotiabank Visa to pay the bill for the other CC.

He also said that he had been paying it in cash in person at HBC. There's too much missing/contradictory from the OP's story.

OP says he did a bill payment though. Nothing missing or contradictory... He said he used to pay it in person at the Bay, which became a nuisance. Then he said he's been paying it from his Scotiabank online account for over a year

Perhaps OP accidentally did a cash advance / balance transfer?

He actually never mentioned using online bill pay. To me it sounds like he made a typo and meant to say that he has been paying his Cap1 card in person at HBC, and has been paying his Scotia Visa card at Scotia online banking. Now he's tried paying the HBC account from Scotiabank for the first time, but messed up and paid it using his Scotia Visa instead of his chequing account. Thus the BT fee. There wouldn't be a balance transfer fee for paying a credit card from a chequing account. That's my guess, we'll have to wait for the OP to come back and clear things up.

Confusion. In the past year, I have always paid the HBC credit card online from my - Scotiabank chequing account.

But the last payment is listed as paid on my Scotiabank VISA . Perhaps I made a mistake . However I wouldn't know how. I suspect the bank changed it to a VISA transfer.
And HBC - $280 is listed as a Bill payment May 13 on my Chequing account.

Well, which is it? Is the HBC credit card listed as being paid from your Scotiabank Visa, or from your Scotiabank Chequing account? You've given us contradictory information again.

OP just trying to put blame on the bank. He did a balance transfer by accident instead of a bill payment.

Balance transfer always have an initial fee. That's how they make money so that they can offer "0% balance transfer offers".

OP just call the bank and find out what happened. If it was an error on your part and they see its a one off often times they will just forgive the charge and credit you back the amount. Its also possible that it was an error on their part albeit unlikely im sure it can happen especially if they've done some backend maintenance etc.
