Seller has to ship via DHL help me mitigate the damage of fees

Piece of original art valued at around $450 US coming from the UK. Value has to be marked so I can’t get the seller to reduce it.

Damage is tax which I’m fine with but the brokerage fees is what I’m trying to minimize. Apparently original art doesn’t get dinged as much but I’m still nervous.

Has anyone dealt with dhl for art?

I hate DHL as well. I'm getting something from Germany and I told the seller to ship via Deutsche Post instead. Problem is that now I don't have tracking available. Oh well...least I saved on those stupid customs and brokerage fees....

Yea I asked for them to ship with a different shipper but they only use DHL. Probably gonna get hit with $200+ duty

DHL shouldn't be in control over how much you get dinged for duty. That's CBSA. They only control what your brokerage charges are. Probably no different than FedEx or UPS...

Yes all couriers are the same. The brokerage charges are what I'm trying to calculate.

I got a cashmere scarf from Scotland in the fall. DHL did not over-charge me on the customs clearance...it was something like $11-15 dollars? I thought that wasn't too bad, wasn't going to bother clearing it myself to save those bucks.

Duty-free, as per CETA.

Why do you think that?

Original artwork is 0% duty regardless of CETA - if it truly does qualify as artwork/collectible.

Assuming you are in Ontario, HST will be around $60 and brokerage or processing fee will be 2.5% of ($450 + shipping cost + tax), so let's say $15
Add in DHL's txn. fee of $4.75, and to be pessimistic a $10 Bonded Storage fee (if it has to be in bond for more than 2 days) and we come to $90 collected by DHL on delivery.

You certainly shouldn't have asked the seller to write in a reduced value as then you would be screwed if the package gets damaged or lost.
And no reputable artwork vendor would do that anyway.

I've had plenty of surprises with DHL and other couriers on....original art.

If original art is indeed 0% duty, then OP should definitely try to get a refund on the duty paid from the CBSA!

Was the item sent by DHL courier?

I have received items shipped via DHL from Germany and they just get delivered by Canada Post like any other package.

That's why I was wondering if the package was sent by DHL Courier

Seems to me all parcel services out of Germany that are not courier go via DHL and get delivered here by Canada Post

Courier services is a different kettle of fish.

With courier services one ends up paying some brokerage fee if ithe package has to be cleared by customs.
With normal parcels one just pays the CP fee if there is a custom fee to be collected

That at least is my understanding
