Selling A Vehicle Privately

Hello. Looking to get some advice on selling a car privately. (The trade in value I was quoted is too low IMO). Not sure where to even start. Want to try and get the best bang for my buck.

1. Vehicle is 2016 Toyota Corolla S $90K km
2. Extended warranty still in play
3. There is a minor dent on the back right hand side. Should I get this fixed before hand or try my chances first?
4. Where would be the best place to advertise? I am located in Whitby, ON.

TIA.

Compare ads from local dealers/private sales. Your car with extended warranty makes it very desirable and you can probably sell it for a very good price.

3. Don't bother fixing the dent. If it's minor most people won't care and you probably won't get nearly the resell increase vs the money to fix it.

I assume you have the papers from MTO and the safety certificate? Selling privately can be a pain in the rear as well. Interested buyers not showing up. Interested buyers taking your vehicle on a joy ride (and on your insurance).

Are you under pressure to sell? You will get significantly more in a private sale if you can be patient. It's a huge hassle. You're going to get a LOT of tire kickers that will waste your time and low ball the shit out of you. Just ignore them and if you can deal with the frustration then you'll get the price you want if the price is fair. It may take a couple months, but just be firm with your price and ignore people that attempt to bargain/insult/barter.

I have sold 4 vehicles privately, and 3 of them were a huge pain in the ass. Be prepared for lowballers to insult and laugh at you when you politely decline their lowball. It's just part of it unfortunately.

Are you aware that the trade in will be deducted from your purchase price of next vehicle thus you won't pay the 13% tax on the trade in amount. Factor that into your math. So if your trade in is 8k it would equal selling privately for 9k more or less.

Exactly. They wasted a lot of time....test driving, lowballers, and potentially breaking something on the vehicles.
And it goes both ways as well. When a seller claims the vehicle/part is in mint condition, but when I showed up, it is not what he/she advertised...

If the minor dent has not scuffed the paint it may be well worth getting it fixed by a PDR (paintless dent repair) specialist for a couple of hundred dollars.

That would improve your negotiating position for both a trade-in or a private sale.

Ask the dealership where you are getting your new vehicle if they would do an "in-and-out transaction" if you bring in your own private buyer for your trade-in.
Then you don't need to be too concerned over selling at a bit below market value - but you still need to shut out time-wasters and habitual low-ballers.

Thanks for everyones insight. I am in no rush to sell. The issue with doing a trade in is I am considering a Tesla. Their trade ins are significantly lower as they provide a trade in quote from an auction house. Thanks George613 for the insight on HST savings. That is worth consideration. And thanks macnut. I didn’t know about PDRs. I’ll have to seek one out.

100% sell private. Tesla isn't in the business of taking your trade and reselling, they just pay wholesale values (because some people can't be bothered to sell private) and ship your car off to auction. You should see the junker trades sitting at Tesla Kitchener right now (more trades than Tesla vehicles in the lot).

Got a trade in quote for my mom's '18 Nissan LEAF SL: Tesla offered $15,000, Nissan offered $18-20,000 and private sale it's worth about $25,000.

All dealers are low balling potential buyers right now.

But the demand is very strong in the used market.

If there was ever a time to sell it privately, it is 2021.

For those who said selling through kijiji was a big waste of time it all depends on your ability to sell something online or anywhere really.

You need excellent photos and use all 10 slots that kijiji allows you for free.

Document the history of the vehicle including all maintenance, repairs, recalls, accidents, rust protection, the more detail the better. If there are issues document them rather than try to hide.

Personally I much prefer to buy used privately because it is easier to obtain the vehicle maintenance and repair history.

As far as hassle goes my last vehicle sale took 5 hours from the time of uploading the ad to finalizing the sale and receiving deposit.

That was a record for me lol. The car I sold before that took almost 6 months because I was stubborn on price and it was a Hyundai (my 1st and last although I didn't have many problems it was a hard sell even though it was low mileage and mint).

I also had the time, if I was busy and time was precious I would have asked a lot less or traded it in and taken the hit.

A newish Corolla should be easy to sell for a good price with a good ad, service history, maybe winter tires included and great pics.

It can be a pain in the arse, but you could get lucky and sell it 11 minutes after posting it on Marketplace for double trade in quote like I did!
