Looking at the Amazon description:

IE 500 PRO
Looking for highest resolution, distortion-free sound with graduated tonal depths – even at maximum sound pressure levels? The IE 500 PRO is the right choice. Designed especially for the vocalist and guitarist.

IE 400 PRO
Looking for distortion-free, natural sound with a 'punch,' transparent midrange reproduction and clear high frequencies? The IE 400 PRO is the right choice. Designed especially for the drummer and bass player.

Obviously not an audiophile so other experts could chime in with their own expertise :)

EDIT: as user keyser-soze pointed out below, the amazon listing has incorrect descriptions for the comparisons of the IE40/400/500s. The above is correct.

I think you (sorry the site) flipped those recommend users.

I think the table is right and the description is wrong, as the low-end is lower on the 500s. Right?

Here's a comparison of the Frequency Response Graph for them, from Crinacle's test (not Sennheiser data): https://postimg.cc/XrgBVn0g

Seems IE 80 S ($292) is better than IE 400 Pro?

He also rates them as a D, so many better IEMs out there even for less money, unless dark and bloated bass is your thing. Winking Face

He rates the IE400 as B, which makes them a better buy than the 500. The 400's look more even and smooth than the 500 in the graph, not sure why Sennheiser thought a bump at 1500Hz is a good thing, maybe that's why it's "for vocalists"
RFD is not just about saving money, it's about the thrill of the hunt and getting the stuff I want without paying full price like Joe Shmoe did.
This applies to everyday items as well as high end items that I don't really need.

What makes you say that about the 1500Hz bump? Voice frequencies are around 80Hz-250hZ, significantly lower than 1500Hz

I did a review on the IE400 and IE40. I was pretty dissapointed in the IE400 relative to the ie40 considering they were 4 times the cost at the time of review. I thought the IE400 were barely better and the IE40 was a gem for the price point. Very underrated IEM in my opinion.

Just some random thoughts about the IE400 and 40. The 40s go for about $100 now. I would still recommend them over the IE 400 at these prices. I have no experience with the IE500 but they better have changed a damn lot for them to try to sell them at those prices.

Idk about this, IE series isn't the heavenly reviewed gear to me. :X

Mixed feeling toward Sennheiser, and I am still a huge fan of Shure...

Seems some high-end gears are having a bad time selling themselves, I believe these price drop could be permanent since many other retailers are dropping prices as well.

Seems some high-end gears are having a bad time selling themselves, I still remorse selling my SE846 years ago. Let's see if Shure will follow the wave to throw out some sweet discount..
I'm taking a look at the Campfire side of things... Maybe an Ara?

Oh, there is another point with Sennheiser Gear, the resell value sucks from my experience...

With those said, 50% off is huge!
