Sharing internet

I have a question about sharing Bell Internet (DSL 6) between two neighbouring houses:

Is there a chance that Bell will discover this sharing and cancel the internet service?

Any other risks to be aware of?

aside from the security and privacy issues, I don't know how I would be able to share a 6 Mbps connection

Hi,

Going to assume you'll be connecting to the Bell modem/router. You'll just become another device in the network. This is the same as if you were to access an open wifi connection in a store. I think if you go the "home group" route, you'll be able to keep access of your devices to yourselves.

No one is really answering your question

The chance of Bell finding out that you’re sharing is slim. It really depends on how you share the connection. If you live in a town house and share a wall with the neighbour, then chance of being discovered is slim to none.

If they are across the street and you are using out door WiFi antennas, they may see the antennas and question why they’re there, but I doubt they would care.

For the rest of you. There are many valid reasons for sharing internet. Maybe the neighbour is a tenant or a relative.

The neighbour is an elderly person whom I trust very much. I don't think they use their internet much. We are in detached houses next to each other. Not concerned about them scamming me, etc, just the risk that Bell somehow discovers and gives them a hard time.

As far as the ISP is concerned, they are being sent data packets from your Modem and are sending them back to the Modem. That is all they see.

They are NOT able to see what you are doing locally on your LAN. Unless of-course if the ISP has custom programmed their modems to send 'em that info. Though I am yet to hear off this in real life and it'd probably be illegal/unethical.

Seems like you're sharing via wifi, so the neighbour would be just another device on your network. Bell won't know and/or care.
When I am at my neighbours house i still use my own internet connection as it is strong enough for that distance.

no ones gonna find out, i shared internet with the guy whos house backs onto my house. We ran a network cable from my house to his, it lasted like 2 years. we also saved money as he paid for half my internet bill. this was when broadband internet was new to neighbourhoods

They can't discover. It is pretty much that you have a very strong wifi, and your neighbours are able to detect it. And you gave your neighbour the wifi password when he/she came over.
There really is no ground for them to do anything.

You can possibly even run a good cable from your house over to your neighbour's and set up another router in their house.

You can share your wife with your neighbour, you can share your car with your neighbour yet you don't think you can share your wifi with your neighbour?

Just remember that the account holder will be "legally" liable for whatever the "activities" of all the clients on the network are.

Bell won't know their @ss from their elbow providing that both you and the neighbor don't tell anyone that you're sharing. Definitely help your senior neighbor, loneliness is real and if it helps him get through the day then do it. Doubt he'll be doing anything heavy but educate him not to give out personal information or credit card information and that if he isn't sure about something to always ask you first. Tell him this often like I do with my father.

Bell will never find out. I've been sharing internet connections with neighbours for 20 years.

You might run into problems with such a slow connection though.

Other than the fact sharing WiFi with 2 house the neighbour might find the connection to be spotty, disconnect or even lags. Might have to install a mesh router in his house.

No good deed is ever unpunished. I hope the OP is prepared to offer unlimited on site support for this senior's computers and tablets, along with general windows and browser support. Once started down this road it will never end.
