It's 1 AM per $10 spend at Shell. Different retailers have different spend amounts per AM.

Activation fees (as listed on back of the card) for prepaid MC:
$25 - $3.95
$50 - $4.95
$100 - $5.95
$200 - $6.95

Visa may be different.

Remember that the bonus 7x air miles is capped at $100 spend per transaction, so getting the $200 card will still only net you 70 AM.
thanks for the info.

I would have done it multiple times if there was no fee on the Mastercard prepaid card. The fee pretty much kills the deal.

I think I'll check out a location to see what other gift cards they have

I did some maths in a spreadsheet. I'm guessing you can probably do this:

1. Buy $100 prepaid card, with Scotia Amex 4% card; net cost $101.71;
2. Use prepaid card to buy store gift card

That'll get you 140 AM. 95 AM = $10, so you're profiting $13. Not terrible. Not amazing.

This would only work if you're buying a non-Shell gift card with the prepaid mastercard. Otherwise you only get 70 AM.

How do you get net cost of $101.71? Is it after deducting $6.25($5.95 + 5% GST) of fee on the prepaid card?
My math says you get 140 AM = $14.7 at $0.105 per AM. Deduct the $6.25 fee will give you net profit of $8.45.
By doing the extra step of buying the prepaid first before buying the store gc will give extra $1.10 profit.

You will make $1.1 for each $100 prepaid after fee. So if You repeat the process 100 times of buying a $100 prepaid card and use the prepaid card to buy another $100 prepaid card, you will $110.

I see on the receipt OP used his mastercard to purchase the prepaid vanilla mastercard. I went to a Shell yesterday to purchase the same prepaid vanilla mastercard but they would only accept cash or debit to process the payment.

It is the cashier or store that makes its own policy. Their system allows CC payment.

Ah, I wasn't thinking about tax on the fee. I did 4% on 100 + 5.95, not 4% on 100 + (5.95 * 1.13) (HST).

So net cost of $102.45 (because the Scotia Amex is 4%, you get 4% of 106.72 back). Less than a dollar extra for buying the prepaid card first.

(I'm assuming I'd pay HST rather than just GST in Ontario..?)

This is what I get in my calculations:
https://d.pr/rOvB

After 50 iterations, you'll make $386 and pay only $336. Profit of $50, so $1 per transaction. Might be worth it for some people.

Actually, the more you buy using this method, the less you'll earn. The best thing to do is just purchase Gift Card of retailers that you frequent. That will net you 11% back on your purchase.

I bought 3* 100$ SDM GC yesterday at Shell with scotia amex.

I got 210AM and also 12$ worth of Scotia rewards.

As long as you buy non shell GC you will be awarded AM.

Make sure no more than 5 trx/day.

Hope that helps.

Just purchased a $100 gc for the Keg. Doesn't work with Keg Gift Cards. I asked the cashier and the cashier said it doesn't work on GC.

Everyone here is talking about getting AM on non Shell gift card purchase. Your store cashier obviously doesn't know the rule. Make sure the cashier scan your AM card. I notice some cashiers don't scan my AM card because they think you won't get AM on gift card. Just tell them to scan the AM card. I think they don't want to scan your card because each store has to pay for the AM they give out. So it is costing them money.

This Airmiles bonus will only work at Shell corporate sites, if the site you are visiting is a dealer site they may not be part of the bonus program.
