shipping from states? (brokerage, customs, taxes, etc.)

this website http://www.steepandcheap.com uses UPS to ship their products to canada.

and all i have heard from forums on RFD that UPS really sucks.

i'm just wondering what if it is advisable to buy from this site and how much would i expect to pay for brokerage, customs, and taxes say...from a $35 product.

how do you calculate the total price (brokerage, customs, taxes) for a product coming to canada?

please forgive me for my lack of knowledge on online shipping. i did do a search but nothing showed up.

Here's a listing of UPS charges for customs clearance:

For a $35 item, you will be charged $7 plus the actual taxes for your province. On an item of that price, there's not that much difference between UPS and USPS/Canada Post as they charge $5 for brokerage. It does get annoying if the item cost is higher, as UPS works on a sliding scale whereas Canada Post just charges a flat rate.

Sometimes, if UPS is the only option provided, a better option is to select UPS Express since the brokerage charge is included (although you still pay for taxes upon arrival). For instance, I recently bought a receiver from the States that cost $399 - I paid around $60 for UPS Express Shipping so saved money instead of paying for standard shipping + $43 in brokerage plus it got here way faster.
