[Shoppers Drug Mart] Kobo Nia eReader $90.5 inc. tax (BC)

Kobo Nia is on sale for $109.99 (ends July 10) in BC (not sure about other provinces), and right now there's a 20x points event for everyone spending over $75 online (ends Sun July 4) which brings down the eventual price to $90.5 inc. tax. The actual calculation:

$109.99 x 1.12 (BC Tax) = $123.19
Regular Points + Bonus Points = 1,635 + 31,065 = $32.7
Final: $123.19 - $32.7 = $90.5 (tax included)

Nia might not be up to some people's standard, but could be useful for others, especially after factoring into the price tag.

The Clara HD is a better unit and can be found similarly priced. Worth the little extra in my opinion.

Where do you see the 25x online event? I only see a 25x instore promotion.

Edit: Found it online. Weird does not show up in the app. I am thinking of getting libra instead of nia. Anyone have experience with both?

Have been watching Clara for awhile. The price did come down to $110-120 range sometimes but it's hard to find a double dip occasion like this one with on-sale and points event combined. Otherwise I would have preferred Clara as well.

I had a Kobo e-reader a couple years ago. Good specs, nice screen. Kobo stopped supporting it. Buyer beware with this brand.

I'm curious what model you got. I have an old Kobo Glo HD that I got at Costco many years ago that still gets firmware updates from Kobo. It's a lot more than I ever expected.

How do they compare to Amazon Kindle Paperwhite?

I prefer the Kobo. Supports more formats. This isn't that much of a problem using software like calibre though for converting. I did a lot of research before landing on the Clara HD a couple years ago and I've been very happy with the decision and have read many books on it. The biggest deciding factor were it's specs and Epub support. Have seen several firmware updates too. Never used a Kindle though for what's it's worth.

Perfect, I was actually shopping Kijiji and Marketplace for a Paperwhite. Might look into the Kobo now since we do have access to many ePub format eBooks.

I have both (Paperwhite and Kobo Clara). I think they both have their pros and cons. For the most part I prefer the Paperwhite but it has a critical flaw that has bitten me a few times. When I turn off my Paperwhite, the battery continues to drain. If I let it sit for a couple of weeks, the battery will be very low. After about a month to 6 weeks, the battery will be dead. There are a lot of comments about battery life regarding the Paperwhite online. It's a common issue. The Kobo, on the other hand retains its battery perfectly. It's easier to load a Kindle book from Amazon but Calibre is much easier to use with a Kobo than with Kindle with its file types.

In the end, I use each one about 50% of the time.

Also to add to what others have said, Kobo supports Overdrive in Canada which allows you to borrow ebooks from your local library whereas the Kindle does not support that in Canada (or they are least didn't in the past).

Here's a Reddit link talking a bit more about the one vs the other: https://www.reddit.com/r/kobo/comments/ ... _or_kindle

Yeah, me too. Unless he got the Mini, it's probably still getting firmware and he just doesn't know about it.

My Kobo Aura HD which is 8 years old gets updates. They're just not frequent. It's not exactly as complex as a smartphone needing endless security updates.

The Arc is really an Android tablet. Got one passed down to me as well, but it was kind of obsolete at launch. Any proper tablet or smart phone would have performed better. It was definitely a miss step for them, but that's tech for you. eInk has been well maintained.

I've had the Kobo Touch for many years, and I'm still happy with it. But wanting to buy a newer model (especially for night reading), I bought the Kobo Nia.

Frankly, this is really crap ... Very slow, the screen hops and the touchsreen is really disastrous.

I suggest you invest in a product other than this.

Honestly, I won't be able to tell you ... having never had this digital reader in hand. But one thing is certain ... is that it cannot be worse than the Nia !!! Winking Face
