Redeem 50,000+ PC Optimum points, get 40% back in points (YMMV)

Retailer:
Shoppers Drug Mart
On Wednesday, there is a YMMV in app offer for 40% back in points when you redeem 50,000 or more points. This is superior to the recent Mega Redemption event during the Black Friday weekend which had a 1.6x multiplier if you were redeeming over 250,000 points because your multiplier is 1.66x and the minimum is just 50,000 points. The drawback is that you need the points upfront in your account.

Check your app, 40% back in points when you spend 50,000 points or more.

Image

Let’s compare this offer with other offers and please correct me if I’m wrong:

20x points days: spend $400 get back 120, 000 points
you’re out $400 - $120 = $280

Bonus redemption days: redeem: 250,000 for $400
you’re out 250, 000 points

40% back: redeem 400,000 for $400, get back 160, 000
you’re out 400, 000 - 160, 000 = 240, 000 points

Redeem max allowed points : 500,000 for $500 get back 200,000 points, which is equal to 320,000 points on bonus redemption day, so $500 of goods only costs 180,000 in points.

Lindt offer is for money spent. When you redeem points, you don't spend money and normally don't earn points (unless there's an error in the system).

Isn't that 50% extra in points which makes it better than 40%

Could this be used in combination with the bonus redemption event? Not sure if the dates line up or not.

Provided you have the points, is this the best offer to buy a Nintendo Switch?

I believe it is, because when I got the switch on Black Friday for 250 thousand points (although I had 410). This way if you have 400 thousand points, switch will only cost you 240 (saving 10000 points)

I think your maths are wrong

Pay 50$, get 40% back, ie 20000 points backs.

Pay 50000 points to get 75$ is the same as
Pay 75$, get 33% back, ie 25000points

That's up to 33% off. For example, a $150 item would cost you 100k points ($100 value).

If you spend close to $75, It's slightly better than the common 20x points offers.
If you buy a $90 item, it would cost you 65k points, which is effectively 28% discount and is worse than the 20x points offer.
If you buy a $120 item, it would cost you 95k points, which is 21% discount.

but from what he wrote, he doesn't get back 25k, he gets a 25k bonus which, imo, would be better if he's spending $75. if you are redeeming more than 75k than the 40% is much better

Well, if you're spending $75, you get 30k back with the 40% offer... So the 40% is still better in terms of return.

Question.... When you use points to redeem, can it cover the taxes portion?

Let say I am picking up a PS4 Pro which is selling at $500 (well, $499.99 to be exact...) at SDM, and after taxes is $565. Please correct me if I am wrong on the following calculation:

So I assume that I can redeem 500K points, which is the maximum points that you can redeem in one transaction, and pay $65 out of my pocket, and get back 200K points with this 40% points back offer. Then the cost of this PS4 Pro should be $65 + $500 ($ value of the points redeemed) - $200 ($ value of the points redeemed) = $365. Is this calculation, right?

Can the other offer $75 for every 50K point beat this price? TIA

$365 is correct and it can be a lot better but it all depends on how/when you actually redeem your points. 200k points on bonus redemption day is equal to $320, so in this example your play station only costed you 180k points and $65 tax in cash.

If I redeem 450k (to cover taxes) I will get 180k back. Total cost 270k points for a switch

1. Redeem 500k points = $750 worth of product.
2. Redeem 500k points = $500 worth of product. Receive 200k points back = $200 worth of product. Net 300k for $500, or 500k for $700.

50k for $75 is better?

1. Redeem 50k points = $75 worth of product.
2. Redeem 75k points = $75 worth of product. Receive 30k points back. Net cost 45k for $75 worth of product.

40% is better?

So it seems like 50k for $75 is best at the absolute highest tier (assuming you spend $750 at Shoppers in one go) but 40% is better otherwise.
