Shoppers Drug Mart Return Policy?

Can anyone confirm how this works? I purchased an item online using both points and cash. The invoice I received said I could return the item in store or in the mail using the attached return label.

I went to the store to return the item and they said they can't return the points to my account and that the points are added in their dollar value back to a gift card. That's quite useless when you consider that I can redeem the points I had spent for more money during events, receiving the cash value is basically like losing potential money.

I left because I did not want to proceed with that method. However, now I am wondering how it works when I ship it through the mail? Do they refund the points back to my account and the cash I spent? Was this store just full of shit?

The store was not wrong in their reply. According to the program rules: Upon the return or exchange of purchases earned through the redemption of PC Optimum™ points at Participating Stores and Program Participants, all redeemed PC Optimum™ points will be forfeited and the member will receive the value of the returned product in the form of a gift card. Their online return policy
https://shop.shoppersdrugmart.ca/returns

"4. Once your return is processed, you will receive a return confirmation email. Your refund will be credited in the same form as your original payment. A return shipping fee of $8 will apply and be deducted from any amounts to be credited."

I would call and clarify how the points will be returned.

I believe ShoppingGuy has provided the correct info as the OP used a combo of cash/points to make his purchase.

The link you provided (to me) means for no points.

Just curious - is that such a bad thing?

You've already redeemed the points on this initial transaction, so I'd presume you were satisfied with the redemption rate at that time anyways.

The OP bought something for $150. He used 100,000 points (normally worth $100) during the points redemption which was worth $140. So, the OP paid the difference of $10 on his credit card.

To return, Shoppers would give back the OP $10 + $100 (100,000 points) onto a Shoppers gift card.

The OP wants the 100,000 points back to use during their points redemption event again.

This is exactly the case. I find that the cash value is useless because getting the actual points back means I can spend it again on a bonus redemption event. I am going to call them and find out. I will post here with the results.

Ooooh, so OP used it at a bonus rate, but the refund is only for the base rate instead?

That's what it seems like, yes.

The link I provided was the return policy for online purchases: https://shop.shoppersdrugmart.ca/returns

The in-store return policy link: https://www1.shoppersdrugmart.ca/en/refunds

Refunds will be provided in the same tender that the purchase was paid in:
  • Cash will be refunded in cash.
  • Debit card will be refunded to the original debit card.
  • Credit card will be refunded to the original credit card.
  • Gift Cards will be returned on a gift card.
  • Cheques if cleared after 10 days will be refunded in cash.
  • The value of any PC Optimum® points redeemed will be refunded on a Shoppers Drug Mart gift card.

Any PC Optimum Points® earned as part of the original purchase will be deducted from the account associated with the PC Optimum® Member's card number that was used for the original purchase (whether or not the PC Optimum Card® is presented at the time of return and/or exchange). If such account balance becomes negative, your cash refund may be reduced by the value of the PC Optimum points earned as part of the original purchase, in our sole discretion.

To sum up, if you redeem 100,000 optimum points, regardless of bonus redemption, you will get back $100 in the form of a gift card. You won't get back the actual 100,000 points.
Have a nice day!

I confirmed, I would not get back the points. Hard lesson learned, I decided to keep the item instead of returning it. I will not purchase anything using points in the future unless its groceries or items for resell. Basically 390,000 points down the drain.

Honestly you probably shouldn't be buying anything at SDM you think you might return in the first place. They aren't exactly known for their return policy (actually the opposite given they have more "final sales" than other major retailers).

Yeah, it was a hard lesson learned. 390,000 points (490,000 with promotion) down the drain.

Why are you saying 390,000/490,000 points down the drain? That saying means lost, gone for no value/nothing in return. You still have the product and got $100 extra value for your points. If don't want the item you will get all of your money back although your points will converted into a $390 GC. The only thing lost would be the bonus $100 value. So it's a $100 bonus down the drain not 390,000 points.

Not really. You got gift card out of it and if you use the gift card during a 20x promo, you would get back 120k points (rounded to $400 for simple math). Basically it’s possible you actually benefited from the transaction instead of losing anything. This isn’t even considering offers better than 20x points or buying products with bonus points.

Exactly what I was going to say.

It's interesting because it sounds like the amounts are different. The in-store policy says they will return the value of the points, whereas the T&Cs for the Optimum program linked above say you will get "the value of the returned product in the form of a gift card", which to me sounds like the full price of the item rather than what you paid in points.

I know in the past, they would give you the value of the item on a gift card. If you bought a Dyson hairdryer worth $450 but only paid $300 in points due to bonus redemption, if you returned it you would get a $450 gift card and have essentially purchased a gift card using points at the bonus redemption rate.

You're getting the $ value back regardless on a gift card. At the worst just put it towards another 20x pts event.

Perhaps think before you make a purchase. To be honest your lucky they even let you do a return.
