[Shoppers Drug Mart] Shoppers Drug Mart (SDM) Bonus Redemption --> Aug 21-22

SDM will be having it's first BONUS REDEMPTION event since the program change on Aug 21-22

50,000 points = $100 (instead of $85)
95,000 points = $200 (instead of $170)

All other redemption levels remain unchanged during the promotion.

Confirmed for Ontario; will add info as details from other provinces become available.

Aug 21 is the day points from the referral event will be received, so it seems SDM is using this as an incentive to spend those points.

From SDM website:

28. Shoppers Optimum Points may not be redeemed towards the purchase of the following products/services: prescription drugs, products containing codeine, electronic gift cards, wireless phone cards, stamps, Post Office stamps and merchandise, passport photos, tickets provided by Ticket Ops or any other event ticket provider, Life Experience Gift Cards, cigarettes and tobacco (where sold), lottery tickets, bus tickets and passes, delivery charges (where applicable).

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TO TRANSFER POINTS: LINK

If you don't see anything you need during this event, you may want to hold off redeeming until Fall 2010 when SDM will introduce approx. 50 Sony Products to their stores, including PlayStation®3 and PlayStation® Portable, as well as an assortment of PlayStation® games, accessories and peripherals. More info can be found HERE. Some stores are already carrying these products -- chime in RFDers and share the locations.

I figured this was coming seeing as this week was refer-a-friend and this weekend is 10K points if you spent 50$ (equivalent to 20x the points as long as you spend exactly 50$, no benefit to spending more. Also note that Optimum Plus members get 12k points instead of 10K) so naturally a bonus redemption event would follow.

With the old points system, the bonus redemption level was 40K points for 100$. So this bonus redemption costs us 25% more points than before, that is a huge difference.

Yeah, this event is horrible value wise if we compare to before the program change. But we have to roll with the punches and make the best of the CURRENT redemption levels now.

You need 27% more points to redeem the same $200 and if you are a plus member, you need 46% more. What a disappointment :(

After the change, it seems that only the refer a friend event is worth shopping for, even the 20x is not that good a value now, I'll stick with shopping in "refer a friend" event only, which is like once in half a year. :(

The Refer A Friend event will always and has always been the most lucrative point events, but this isn't to say 20x point events are no longer lucrative. This upcoming week is the spend $50 and get 10K (or 12K for Optimum Plus Members) Bonus Points.

Spending $50 will bet you 10K in points ($21.06 value) or 12K ($25.26 value) *If redeemed at the highest value on bonus rewards days*. Those are still pretty good returns, if you need items to buy that are on sale or would buy sometime later as well.

For example, if you shop this Sunday:
Add bottled water - 4 x $2 (24 packs) = $8
Royale Bathroom Tissue - 4 x ($5.99 - $1 Gocoupon.ca = $4.99) = ~$20
Royal Kleenex - 4 x $0.69 = ~$2.80

Now you've spent $30 on items you'd normally buy. Now you just need another $20 on other items you may stock up on. Not many stores run promos where you are getting 30%+ cashback to spend on store merchandise.

Great, just what we need. A challenge to see who can get a receipt RIGHT on the $50.00 subtotal  ?

See, I will try my best NOT to succomb to the lure and go shop there. Why? I'm not getting my points, and I have to send a message to SDM HQ. I hope everybody else does too.

But since I drained all of my SDM points, it will be a while to get there to even redeem at that level.
Yeah, drained here also :D .

So the question is....will you actually STOP shopping there nonetheless? The only way to send SDM HQ a message is if substantial decreases in activity are noted. They'd have to modify something to bring their sales back up.

If we all just say, oh it's not worth it, but keep going back, nothing will change.

I certainly have stopped shopping there. $5 here or $10 there but nothing more.

Just wondering as a Plus member, what do I get back after spending 95k points? We used to get 10k back after spending 75k.

Is that "points back policy" still there?

Nope!
Based on feedback from our Optimum Plus members, we have replaced the instant Optimum points reward when redeeming at the top two tiers with new and exciting offers.
That part does suck though.

Well, I find purchasing lottery or transit tickets is okay. You won't get points for it anywhere else. But at SDM, you can purchase the GC first to get points and then use it on other things like tickets. It's not a lot but better than nothing. Or if there's some grocery items you want that's the same price as other places it's okay too. Especially if SDM is closer. I also go there for milk.
