.

Today, March 1st, restrictions have been lifted in Ontario on capacity limits and on vaccination status to eat in food courts. However, the mall hours haven't returned to what they use to offer, which was open until 9pm.

What's going on?

The mall stores probably don’t have enough people to staff. Don’t worry your malls will be open soon enough long hours!

Because... that costs money?

Just because capacity limits have been removed doesn't mean there will be a rush of people charging in and waving their credit cards to buy anything that isn't nailed to the ground.

I was at Sherway Gardens (a big GTA shopping mall) the other night at 7:30PM and it was totally quiet, even the Apple Store had only 1-2 people browsing. Some of the stores inside had even shorter hours, closing at 6 or 7 PM

Sherway is open to 8 PM Mon-Weds, 9 PM on Thurs - Sat and 6PM Sun. STC is probably similar

Yeah...I'm by Hillcrest Mall (Richmond Hill) and the mall is a little buy between 5pm to 6pm, but then it peters off and by 7:30 it's pretty dead.

OP, things take time to change...there are still many people who are apprehensive at going back to a crowded level like pre-pandemic. Personally, I'm one of those. I'll go out...but not to crowds.

I can't imagine part time workers for the stores. They are constantly exposed to the possibility of infection each day. We have not reached an endemic state (of mind) yet. What does it actually mean to each of us when we say we have to "live with it"? When all of us understand that - in our own way, it will get better. <---- my opinion

Psychology. You don’t just flip a switch and everyone goes back to normal.

I'd like to see 9pm finishes. All those staff are "back to work" but now they are short hours per week, on every paycheque because of this decision.
Just don't want this swept under the rug and next thing you know, we lose our 9pm open times

Psychology will definitely an important factor.

Ending mandates does not mean the "risk of getting sick by picking up that splurge" has changed for the better overnight. Some people may even view it as a higher risk than yesterday while others will see less mandates as less risky.

I hardly visit the malls anymore but the few times I do I visit early or late and it's never busy. extending the closing times seems unnecessary. maybe in the summer if/when traffic returns?

Guess the appetite isn't there, time will tell.

Walmart is certainly slammed with people when the mall closes at Scarborough Town Centre

Personally, I do a lot of mall shopping in the evenings and my trips have been cut short by the 7pm finish times (what it's been).

This is a shopping forum, we can't talk about any other topic ever again while there's world fighting? Okay, thanks ...

Good. They shouldn't be open until 9. It's usually dead quiet in our store for the last 1 to 2 hours anyway. It's a waste of everyone's time. Closing at 9 means I probably get home by 9:20 (or 9:45 if stopping to get groceries) and I don't get to eat dinner until at least 10 or 10:30 PM. Same goes for most if not every other worker at the mall, unless their dinner consists of mall restaurant food (aka mostly garbage). 7PM close is fine. There's nothing high priority from a shopping mall. Grocery stores are typically separate and are the lone exception here.

Why are you on a RFD shopping sub forum reading threads about shopping mall hours when you could be curing COVID or on your way right now to the Ukraine to enlist in their war efforts?

Instead, virtue signalling to complete strangers on a Canadian deals site is what matters...

One step at a time. I'm sure they'll eventually go back to being open until 9pm but it might still be a little while longer.

I'd also like to think conversations are being had with the stores to see how capable they are of modifying their hours before moves like these. Some might not be able to cover the extra hours easily (or at all).

Shopping habits have also changed. The pandemic helped move that along quicker, but online shopping probably plays a role.

Erin Mills Town Centre in Mississauga just went back to "regular" hours 10 am to 9 pm.
It's not even busy but they have to stay open, it's in their lease agreement.

I don't care about Mall hours but I miss 24/7 SDM.
quick google search shows only 2 locations in whole greater Vancouver area, are open 24/7.
There used to be lot more before Covid....
