Shun Knife resharpening experience?

I'm an amateur and was gifted a Shun DM0760 Classic 7-Inch Asian Chef's Knife when I moved into my first place 6 years ago. I know its not the fanciest of knives but it has sentimental value and I enjoy using it. It's been well used and while I do using a honing rod and a simple knife sharpening tool, there are some minor chips along the blade.

I noticed that Shun has free lifetime re-sharpening with a $15 shipping/processing fee, mailed to Oregon. Has anyone done this?

Thank you

I take my Japanese knives to Knife Toronto to get them sharpened when necessary. Highly recommended.

For $15 you can sharpen it local.

Do not take it to someone who uses a machine.

Do they actually stone the knife? That's pretty cool actually.

I'd be surprised if Shun themselves don't use a machine.
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

I took my Shun santoku to Tosho last year to get some small nicks taken out. Came back better than new.

The high end shops who specialize in knives use Whetstone. (Doesn't hurt to ask for sure if you've never been to the business).

It was a long time ago. I'm pretty sure I went to this guy (before he opened up this shop) to reprofile my Henckel chefs knife after it was sharpened by Henckel on their machine.

He did a good job.

Tosho pricing for sharpening is $10 German -$15 for Japanese which is better than sending your knife to Shun for FREE [not really when you consider shipping] sharpening.

If you're into knives...suggest you learn to do it yourself. Buy some whetstones and cheap knives and practice before you do you own expensive knives. Whetstones are somewhat forgiving because you take a lot less metal doing it. Worst thing you can do is likely change the angle a bit which is not the end of the world.

You can also take classes to learn the craft....class is $145 but they GIVE you a knife valued at $88 to sharpen, so net cost is $60.
