Sizing down for winter tires

What winter tire size would be recommended for a Toyota Camry that currently has 235/45/R18 tires?

Would sizing down to 17” or down to 16” be recommended?

Look in the owner's manual. It probably lists the smaller tire sizes for the lower trim levels (if there are any).

More critical aspect for winter tires is width, as opposed to the rim size. Narrower tires cut through snow better than wider tires because they bear more weight per square inch. Often referred to as Pizza Cutters. :)

If you get a 16" rim but the same width tires, you're not really gaining as much as if you went for the same size 17" rim with a narrower width tire.

Except maybe that it's cheaper to get a 16" rim+winter tire combo...

I agree with others where you can check other trims of your model year and go from there. That said, you should be fine going as low as 16”, though you’ll have to adjust for the height.

This site can help picking out a smaller (or larger) tire:

In your case, I’d probably look for 215 60 16 as EndlessRide says, you’ll want a more narrow tire for winter. Personally, to avoid being off with my speedometer, try to stay within a percent or so for size.

Just keep in mind, unless you got some wacky calipers or something, you may not be able to go a different size. I do doubt this for the Camry though.

Go with 205/65-16. That's the stock size on my 2014 Camry and is within 1% of the diameter of your 18's.
