Smart Phone Camera vs Point & Shoot

Hi,
I'm looking for a convenient camera to take family photos when we are out and about or at the kids sports. I have been using a galaxy s6 for the past 5 years and am still impressed with the video and photo quality. Are the newer smart phone cameras that much better? My wife has an iphone from 2018'ish and the s6 blows the image quality away.
Am open to a point & shoot, but you can't beat the convenience of a phone :) Was also reading about a go pro, but those don't look overly convenient to haul around

Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

I own the S6 and now the S20. The S20 is about 4-5 times better. It also has 3 cameras including a really fun ultra wide one. In the last 5 years, the quality of picture and video from smartphone got so much better. After the S6, smartphones started to do photo stacking without you even knowing it and they do cleaner and brighter photos indoor or at night.

Don't get a P&S, unless it is like a Fuji X-100V or something like that. Any cheap $300-400 one won't do anything as close as flagship phones of today.

Go Pro is another type of cameras. You don't use it to make better photos or videos than your phone, but you use it in a creative way and strap anywhere your phone can't or moments that your phone won't survive if you drop it.

If you like convenience and you want something better, definitely invest in a flagship phone. Something like the Samsung S21 Ultra or the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I have the S10 (as a work phone) and the camera is very ho-hum. S20 is the bigger improvement and worth it if your smartphone is your everything device in life.

I guess it depends on what you really want or willing to pay for. Do you want high or the highest end of phone camera photos. From what you wrote, you are impressed with the video and quality of your S6 phone.
I know the Samsung S10, doesnt have the best ratings for photos, but I am sure its still a good upgrade. I mean for around $500 or so, you can buy that phone or pay $1000 or so for the S20.

I dont know if you can still do this but, maybe you can go into Best Buy and test out the phone cameras and decide what works for you.

The Go Pro is completely different, its an extreme wide angle, so limited in the type of use. It is small, so it not inconvenient to use and carry around imo.

Halton Hills, Ontari…
A decent budget P&S with manual controls (And if possible, the ability to shoot RAW) will surely outperform smartphones because of the bigger sensor size. Especially in low-light situations. The phone's software does the HDR magic for you (Increase saturation, increase sharpness, etc) but if you are willing to spend maybe a few minutes on your RAW photos, the end result would be far better from a P&S.

If you view your photos on a slightly bigger screen (bigger than the smartphones screen sizes), the difference would be even greater.

I been contemplating this for a while..

The issue with me is with a toddler, a DSLR is way too bulky to have with me while I am trying to negotiate snacks, wipes, and dslr in backpack while chasing down a toddler.

Phones have come so far and their processing power is so much more that they can leverage software that does so much image processing for you on the spot.

I myself have been looking at the Fuji X-E4 and been contemplating if I even make the move with a phone 11.

Phones are going to win for convienience 100% of the time because it's always with you and most phones can pull up the Camera app with a button shortcut (double tap power or volume key). If you're just getting snap shots and sharable moments, phones will do fine. If you have time and ability, a mirrorless is way better with image quality and versatility.
