Looking for a good free alternative to the native youtube app, to remove ads on my Shield TV.

Anyone use Smart YouTube TV? Does 4K work using the native webview browser?

4k works just fine, but HDR does not (HDR streams will just not load properly).

I've been using Smart YouTube TV for like a year now on my Shield. It's constantly updated by the developer, supports 4k and yes, there's no ads.
When you watch a video you will see a black "loading..." screen a couple times before the video starts. This is the app bypassing the ads, I think.
There are no ads interrupting the videos either. It's great.

I ran the apk on virual total, it seems to phone home to tvbox.one and djjubeemedia.appboxes.co. These seem to be Russian sites for apks, curious to know how if anyone knows about those sites?

well the developer is russian. You can chat with him on the home page on the smart youtube tv page. Maybe that's where he hosts updates.

4k main has been great for me (actually just called "Pro Main" now).

does this do 4k 60fps ? also its lags right? as its streaming from a different server then youtube? i don't get how they prevent the ads..does it go thru a vpn?

As far as i understand it just uses a different player, as for ads its much the same as using an ad blocker on PC.

On what device? The Shield does not support vp9.2, so even the native youtube app will not work with HDR.

That might change with Android Pie, if and when the Shield gets it as vp9.2 is built in. But who watches HDR on youtube anyways?
