Smoking guy at home

I rented a bachelor room around 3 months ago. This is a house. I have separate kitchen and washroom. However, the guy next to me, is smoking every 15 min. and it comes through the vent into my room. I talked with owner and he argued with this guy. The guy just don't care. Owner wants to kick him out but said it may takes 3 months. He is not a nice person to talk face to face. He can't smoke at home accordingly his rent agreement but he does. He doesn't open his windows.

Owner asked me to close my vent. I did, but now my room is cold. I have lease here. What should I do about that? What is your advice?

You might want to move this/check out Home and Garden, where this topic has been discussed previously and where you may get more responses.

with the vent closed, Can you still smell the smoke? If not, then ask landlord for a plug in heater

with vents open, you could use an air purifier

Seconding the air purifier suggestions for the short-term to protect yourself.

Unfortunately, in COVID-times, your loser neighbour isn't getting evicted any time soon... especially in the winter. I'd start looking for a new place- given that your living situation isn't safe, you have every right to break your lease.

So what do you want? If you want to stay there, you'll have to put up with it until the landlord can deal with it, which might take months. If you want to move out, then there's a process for you to follow, even if you have a 1 year lease. In either case, start here:

Seal it off using some plastic wrap and tape. I am sure you can seal off that vent on your own.

Also, maybe talk with your neighbor or kick his butt.

what is going on here? why does OP have to figure out all these vent solutions when obviously the other guy is violating the lease contact. Does it say no smoking on the lease contract? Yes? show him that and tell him to put that filthy thing out or ask him to smoke outside. I wouldn't put up with this even if he is a member of mafia.

It's been pointed out to the other tenant that he's not allowed to smoke in his room. He doesn't care. Now what?

Doesn't matter. Society doesn't work with people who don't care. We have to make him care.

So you'll break his kneecaps with your keyboard?

yes if that's what it takes :) you can keep inhaling that toxic like scared cat. It's pretty dumb to me not standing up for your right. Doesn't mean use violence, just ask him to do the right thing until he listens.

I don't get it. I would do everything in my power to stop him from smoking indoor.

Right. Because people who ignore no smoking clauses in their lease will stop smoking just because you nag them.

Most likely, people like the OP’s “neighbor” know exactly what they can get away with, and don’t GAF about anyone else. Which means if you want things to change, you need to focus on what you CAN control. Which means getting out of the place. Or they can wait the multiple months till the LTB finally evicts him, assuming the landlord makes the effort to file.

This is the most reasonable course of action.

good luck with that. he's already demonstrated he doesn't care. Now what are you going to do?

I would ask your landlord to move you to another room away from this smoking guy . Alternative temporary solution is for your landlord to provide you with an electric heater so that you do not feel cold in your current room with the vents closed.

The landlord has a problem, not you! If you're paying your rent, why should you have to put up with it????? Tell the landlord to lock the other guy out for breaking his contract.

Stop paying rent until the landlord fixes his problem.
