FYI, if you've been eyeing the SNT2114 like me, I got an answer from igocordless.ca that they have all been recalled to EGO for an "cosmetic problem". They are waiting on what to do next. That's why it's not listed anymore on rona/lowes or igocordless.ca.

Looks like Ariens is getting ready to compete head to head with Toro.

Ariens is most well known for it's commercial grade two stage blowers and had given up the single stage market to Toro. The previous Ariens single stage models, the SS21 (136cc, discontinued) and Path Pro 21" 208cc gained very little traction with commercial operators who made the Toro and Honda single stage units a defacto standard.

21" Commercial

Ariens introduced a new commercial grade single stage machine, the Professional 21 with 208cc engine, 21" width , heavy duty all metal construction, heavy duty paddles and a spring mounted scraper bar. It's a direct competitor to the Toro 721RC . Both have 1900 lbs/min capacity. A neat feature is the metal handle that doubles as a loading skid so that the machine can easily be slid up and into a pickup truck by 1 person.
$649 US = $998 Cdn

18" Small residential

In the small single stage area, Ariens brings the S18, with 99 cc engine, 18" width, recoil start, manual chute and 1300 lbs/min capacity. Its a direct competitor to the Toro 518ZR (1100 lbs/min capacity)
$429 US

20" Hybrid for deep snow

Ariens brings it's first hybrid 2 stage to the market. It's a cross between a single stage and a two stage. It's DNA from Ariens is a true 2 stage system with a separate auger and impeller stage. It features a rubber tipped impeller that uses drag to propel the machine forward and it clears to bare pavement ala Toro powercurve. There's no other self propulsion provided as with the Toro QXE hybrid personal pace system, but the Ariens is smaller (20" vs 24") and easier to handle/ store. Like the Toro QXE, it will handle snow that's too deep for most single stage machines

The Crossover 20 features a 179 cc engine, 20" width, 10" high auger, 14" free rolling wheels and a claimed capacity of 1733 lbs/min. It's closest competitor is the much larger Toro 724 QXE (212 cc, 24", personal pace, 2500 lbs/hr). The Toro personal pace self propel system doesn't clear all the way to pavement, but close

$699 US

For the GTA area, some of it depends on :
a) how big a windrow the snow plow leaves at the bottom of your driveway plus how long it gets left for / how frozen it gets
b) gravel/ grass or pavement ?
c) how far does the snow need to be thrown and does it have to be blown to a specific spot ?

Two stage = gravel/ grass surfaces, large/icy windrows, throws farther
Single stage = pavement, normal windrows, throws normal distance 25-35'

The Snow Joe ION18SB 40-Volt 18-Inch Electric Cordless Snow Blower is interesting. I wonder if anyone has any experience with this one.

Cordless and light-weight is what I am looking for.

The defacto unit of choice would be the Toro 721 = 212cc engine (approx 7hp)
E = electric start
R = Recoil or manual start
QZE = quick chute - which allows you to remote control the direction of the chute on the fly (i.e. have to blow the snow to a specific spot)
RC = commercial version with heavy duty paddles and larger drive belt, recoil/manual start, manual chute,

If you have larger snowplow windrows or need to throw a greater distance, the Toro 821 has a larger 252cc engine (approx 8hp)

Electric start isn't really needed in most cases, most people end up using the recoil start (unless there's physical strength issue - like an older person)

The other machine would be the Honda HS720C

I've got this Toro 721R last month.

For me, it was a tough call to decide between gas-operated and battery-operated.

Finally pulled the trigger for a gas one.

It's a basic 2 stage - powerplant is Loncin based. As noted in the review, it's the same engine that powers Toro 7 series - the 721 and 724 single / hybrid . These engines, like many other chinese engines, were also known as chonda or a chinese clone of the Honda GX commercial series engine.

The main problem with lower end two stage machines is that they can be hard to turn around as the wheels are manually clocked together

I don't think the hybrid version got very good reviews - that version allowed you to use either 120VAC plugin via extension cord or the 40V battery pack. Most people complained that the there wasn't enough power when running from the 40V battery pack

The version you show only allows battery power, no plug in extension cord option

Honda has a $150 off promo on the HS720C (manual start) and HS720CS (electric start) until dec 31, although Honda charges PDI/ Freight extra on top of the advertised price. Some Honda dealers waive it , so ask
https://powerequipment.honda.ca/special-offers

For Toro, most GTA people on RFD do a price match at Home Depot against Kooy Brothers or Alpine Lawn

The big discounts are usually end of season

If you are interested in a cordless snowthrower, Costco.ca currently has Greenworks 80 V 22 in. Snow Thrower on for $699 ($150 off from original $849.99). The in-store price was already $699, but I was able to use the $50 off online-only coupon (GOM deal), also of course delivery to the door.
This deal is valid Nov 27 to Nov 29
https://www.costco.ca/greenworks-80-v-2 ... 88898.html

Lowes and Rona have the (possibly equivalent) Greenworks 80 V 22" at a regular price of $799.00. Saying "possibly equivalent" because their model # doesn't match the one Costco sells. I read that Costco might be "Gen I", while the others are "Gen II" - don't know the difference.

Also, Can Tire has a smaller Greenworks on sale (60V 20") at $379.99 ($220 off the original price of $599.99)

Just saw Amazon has 30% off on some Snow Joes, ends in 13 hrs:
https://www.amazon.ca/s?k=Snow+Joe+SJ62 ... nb_sb_noss

$168 for a 22" electric (corded) Snow Joe SJ627E I think is pretty good, the 21" version is almost the same price, 18" corded SJ620 is 15% off at $149, and the 48 V (24x2) 18" cordless is $381.50,
