Sony A80J vs LG C1 [65 inch]- Price as Tiebreaker?

So I was ready to go in and buy the Sony A80J OLED tv (65 inch) at $3000, as from all the research I mainly watch tv and movies. Plus my gaming setup is PS4 and Nintendo Switch so I think the upgrade just for gaming wasn't as necessary.

However this past weekend the LG C1 dropped its price to $2800 and now I am left trying to decide whether the extra $200 is worth it for the Sony. I feel on most fronts the Sony wins out but I'm not sure I can say without a shadow of a doubt it's really worth $200 more. Most people seem to be in their camps about which one is the better version but I am really on the fence here. I know with how much I will be paying, it's not so much more but it's still enough that it's worth considering.

Can anyone help me break the tiebreaker? Thanks

This video seems to be a good breakdown but again, its that difference in price I was a bit unsure whether the Sony is worth the $200 more

If next-gen gaming is the priority for you then the LG is better, if movies/tv are your priority then the Sony is well worth the premium. I had the same dilemma and all the home theatre fanatics I talked to basically said to go Sony and there's no debate, but they don't care about gaming at all.

The main thing for me that the LG had going for it was its price was cheaper. I don't care about the 2 vs 4 hdmi 2.1 inputs, as I'm planning to get a new receiver once they come out with next years models. For LG's ui vs Sony using google tv that may matter to you, but personally I turn off internet access to my tv and just use an Apple TV so that doesn't matter to me. Remotes are very different and I find the LG remote cheesy, but either way once I set it up I don't touch it (thank you hdmi cec).

I ended up spending a bit more to get a 77" Sony over the comparable LG. VERY happy with it, its stunning.

Thanks so much for that. I agree 100% on those points. I figure I won't upgrade to a PS5 for a while yet and some experts I talked to seemed to be that unless you are using the tv for PC gaming, it's overblown the advantage of LG over Sony. And the 2.1 advantage is minimal. I'm in the same boat, my Nvidia shield and reciever are not 2.1 compatible at the moment anyway.

And certainly the UI, remotes and stuff certainly feels a win for Sony. The main thing I feel is that most including yourself is that the picture looks better for movies on Sony so I think the extra cost is worth it in the end.

And on the 77 inch, it would be nice. I think it was just the price hike from 65 is too much for me.

I am having exactly the same quandary at the moment.

Most of the articles and videos seem to say that the Sony handles movies and TV better. I don’t own a game console and won’t be getting one anytime soon so it’s just for watching movies, Netflix and Bell Fibe TV. I’ve also been considering the 950H but totally different panel of course.

Will be following this thread for sure!

Honestly if you ended up buying the LG it's not like you're going to be disappointed, they're both great TVs.

Sony has claimed VRR is coming this winter which should bring it a bit closer gaming-wise, but you can never be certain with manufacturer promises as their priorities often change as next years models become closer to release.

They are both great TVs and either one I am sure you will be more than happy with, they offer stunning picture quality. 200$ isn't that much more if you think of how many years you will own the TV. If the difference was 500-600$ I'd say go with LG, but for 200$ if you were already leaning on the A80J I'd say go with it.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Made the order for the Sony. In the end another $200 wasn't so much more to pay. The LG looked good but I think the Sony being better for tv and film seemed like that was better for me.

No, I don't think it does, it has the older panel, 'non-Evo'. At the 83" C1 size, it might have the Evo panel.

If you are ok with buying from an electronics retailer that will negotiate price then you can likely find the A80J 65" for under $2800, actually under $2700

Yea, just saw the HDTVtest video confirming A80J is the older panel. Not sure how much of a difference it'll make for me, coming from a non OLED 1080P TV lol.
