Sony, Honda Joint Venture - Sell first EV in 2025

Sony and Honda are forming a joint venture this year to sell battery-electric vehicles with the aim to begin selling the first model in 2025.

Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the first model and Sony is on the mobility service platform.

They are open to bringing other companies on board.

I wonder if they may use the Sony Vison-S 02 concept.

Honda's first EV in 2025? Strange that Honda, and many others, should be so far behind. Tesla gave away the technology royalty-free. They should have just copied the basic components. It's like they were keeping their options open for hybrids, hydrogen, etc. So late to the game now, especially with gas at $2+/liter in Vancouver. Yes, I know, the Federal Government says that everything is "transitory", until it isn't. Earn more, make less.

It seems possible that new startups in the EV world might completely wipe out several big car manufacturers in 15-20 years. Thanks to LG and Samsung, the Korean car manufacturers might get much further ahead.

Sony’s first car. Isn’t that the teaser car going viral earlier in the year? Nice

Sony 1st debut the concept in CES 2021 and follow up with SUV concept in 2022. 3 years of development make sense but still not sure where they are going to source the battery.

1st Honda EV available to us will be an SUV based on GM ultium platform built in USA with LG Chem battery.

This joint venture's first model will be in 2025.

Honda had the Clarity EV, which was discontinued at the end of 2019

Thing is, that's only a memorandum of understanding. Once those 2 EVs with GM are finished, that's it as Honda is moving to their own platform. Sony and Honda joint-venture means they are pooling talent and resources. Given the timing, likely this the EV on Honda's own EV platform or something similar.

I don't think they are late at all on the EV front. Toyota themselves only committed to 2025 for full electrified lineup which means Hybrid, PHEV and EV. Honda is late with their hybrids though.

PS does this mean Honda TVs are coming?

They're not late. They've had hybrids but kept discontinuing them in short order.

Accord
Civic
CR-Z
Insight
Clarity

All discontinued. The Insight alone has been discontinued 3 times. The first gen Insight launched in 2000 to compete against the original Prius.

I wonder if build quality and reliability will be above average?

No more risk of motor oil fuel dilution in BEVs.

Sony could contribute to ADAS technology and entertainment. Sony still is a leader in lenses and photographic components. Maybe can also do away with radar and lidar.

For me, they are late. They have zero EV at the moment until the Prologue and same goes for PHEV.

And as you mention, they keep discontining car and the cars in questions were flops. I have seen the Insight what maybe 1-2 times tops while Hyundai was doing a good job with 3 version of the Ioniq. They still haven't release the Hybrid CR-V here and there no version of the new HR-V in hybrid. In the meantime, even the new Civic and HR-V are available in hybride in Europe.

Well, they did cancel Clarity/Insight/CR-Z. For some reason, IMA never caught on and packaging/design are failures (Clarity is ugly, Latest Insight isn't a hatchback, CR-Z is 2 door)

That said, I thought Accord hybrid is around and there is plan for Civic Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid are both coming as Alliston is preparing for fall production.

Can you image cars in the future made by Cell phone companies?

Samsung Car S / S Lite
Apple Car (already in the works)
Huawei Car
LG ThinQar
BB Mobile car
TCL EV car

Future is looking bright?

Sorry, most recent software update disabled your drivers side headlight. Please wait for OS ver.10.2.381 for potential fix. Temporary workaround is to remove your vehicle's SIM card, start the car, and re-insert the SIM card to bypass version check.
