These are my favourite trail running shoes I've ever used and I do quite a bit of trail running. They run true to size.

Does anyone know if they are true to size or if you need to go up/down a size? Are the insoles removeable? Any input from those with flat feet?

EDIT: Thanks TheProcess. Missed that while glossing over quickly.

OP location listed as Chiliwack BC. I would do nothing but trail running if I lived there.

If someone is looking for an everyday trail shoe, the fujitrabuco lyte are pretty decently priced right now, 40% off over at Sporting life for for $89

The Mad river 1 is rated higher, but the the Mad River 2 is very very temping to add to the pile for wearing in the rain mud and snow.

Good price for both.... just need the events to be scheduled!
If I robbed the place I would be out by now....

You can remove the insoles from the Mad River 1's. They have an insole and another layer of cushion both of which you can remove. I can't comment on the Mad River 2. I bought a pair of each at this price. I run between a 9 and 9.5 throughout all shoes and I am a 9 in these. The toebox is spacious and I too have flat feet (damn 40-year-old feet).

Hell to the yes. I owned the Mad River 1's and they are my running, trail running and hiking shoe. I do everything in them. Big hikes. I've never had a blister until 2 weeks ago when I finally wore them out in the heal. At least 2000kms into them between running, hiking

because, unlike most trail shoes that have the uphill grips on the ball/toe and downhill grips on the heel. Both these Mad River TR also have, if you were wondering what the weird circles on the sole are for, they have a design you can drill studs into for those winter runs

Thanks OP.

Tempted to purchase one of them as they seem pretty decent. However, I did just buy the Saucony Excursion TR14 Gor-Tex a few weeks ago from Sportchek when it was on sale.

Edit: Ended up ordering the Saucony Mad River TR2, as well as a pair of Salomon Supercross Blast Trail Running, which are also on sale (I needed to find something to get free shipping, plus wanted to see how the Salomon's feel).

This gives a brief description of the differences between the Mad River TR1 and the Mad River TR2:
Shoe Review Saucony Mad River TR 2

They mention the TR2 is slightly heavier than the TR1, but has a bit more cushioning (TR2 uses PWRRUN).

Edit: GCR currently has 4% bonus cash back for Sportchek

Why all brands make trail shoes ugly on purpose. Other than Arc’teryx (too boring n bland in this case) all hiking shoes are super yuck.

And this applies to most of other hiking apparel n gear.

Great deal especially with the FF code but the appearance just kills it for me.

I personally like the Loud and Bright design that most brands apply to their trail running gear. Especially Nike and Hoka. Visibility and safety are probably one reason, but it's also fun. It's not like most people are dressing to impress in a classy understated way when they're covered in mud in the middle of a forest :P

Depends on the terrain. I love these shoes for running but prefer more ankle support when hiking, especially if there are a lot of lose rocks to climb on

I get the preference for hikers over these especially because these do not have a rock plate built in, but these shoes grip on every terrain in every weather and angle. You will feel rocks a bit under your feet.

Tempting, any thoughts on a filler item to bring it up to free shipping? Otherwise the Friends/Family Code does basically break even with that cost.

Hmm seems like a great deal. I just retired a pair of peregrine.
