Squeaky carpet floor

Floors are squeaky underneath the carpet. It either squeaks in some areas and mostly cracking sound. I bought a squeak no more kit. I want to screw down the entire carpet floor. The joists are spaced 16inchs apart. What’s the spacing for perimeter and field should I screw?

No squeak kit? Sounds like stop leak for vehicles…..

Let me guess, comes with a bag of screws so your going to screw the floor down and hope for the best?

I would say live with it until your going to redo the floors, then fix it properly (screw and glue subfloor down, check for any water leaks which could be damaging the floor) then no more squeaks and no more gimmicks

Good luck. Let me know when you jam your toes into the screws and also the ripping of the carpet.

Tear out the carpet ... put screws into the joists where squeaks occur ... then redo the flooring properly.

Its not complicated. Find the joist and put down screws until the squeaks stop. The squeak no more kit has screws that have "break away" heads and they work fine. Just find your joists with a small drill bit first, and then screw away, lol.

Some squeaks I found were actually from nails holding the base 2x4s for the walls to the subfloor. You can remove the baseboards and screw behind to tighten those too.

Just remember that you may not be able to fix all the squeaks. Sometimes there is movement in the seams that you're not going to be able to fix from above.
+1 for this concept if you have access from below.

I simply used wood screws at an angle from underneath to grab the subfloor. Then applied PL premium on both sides of the ceiling joists to the subfloor. It resolved all squeaks for me. It was fast, cheap and easy so I did most of the floor as a precaution.
