#2) Does people setup their router or per their devices? (example tv box android, fireTV, chrome PC or tablet (wifi))?
#3) does this make kodi's apps less loading when viewing online video? Internet performance will be better?

Please... I still trying learn ...when we need VPN services....beside hiding our ip.

Thank you.

I got the lifetime subscription to Windscribe late last summer so maybe I can help answer your questions.

I have an Asus RT-AC66u B1 (also known as AC1750-B1) and have used my Windscribe VPN profiles on it without issues.

1) No, once you activate the Windscribe VPN profile in your router, all your devices that are connected to the router will have the same IP address as whatever country you're connecting to. Keep in mind the Asus router only has a limited number of slots for VPN servers (I think mine has 4). See https://windscribe.com/guides/asus
2) For me, it depends on my needs. I avoid doing it on the router because I have other people at home on the same network and don't want to mess up their Internet usage. Usually I only use Windscribe on my phone or on my laptop for streaming... On my laptop, I use a mix of both Windscribe's Mac OSX app and their Chrome browser plugin. Usually the Chrome plugin is faster to connect but if you want to make sure your IP address is completely masked, use their desktop app. There's some discussion on the Windscribe reddit about leaking IPv6 addresses: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windscribe/com ... c/dwffpu5/
The developers are super responsive on Reddit, so if you want to read up on some the threads before committing to this deal, it's not a bad idea.
3) I don't use Kodi much, so I can't really say (I have an Android Box, but I just watch Netflix regularly there). FYI Windscribe also has two servers to access Netflix US and Netflix UK for Pro accounts, but those are limited to desktop/Chrome browser plug-in only at the moment.

Internet performance is hit or miss sometimes -- it really depends on the server you're connecting to. What I find really baffling is that Canadian server performance tends to be pretty bad/slow at times compared to any other US location I'm connected to. I haven't done much testing since I only use it sparingly to access geoblocked content.

If you torrent or download lots, the SOCKS5 proxies (only 2 so far for US and NL.. Netherlands?) have worked without issue for me. I download more than I torrent and the speeds are decent.

@Nemlack I don't have the Fido modem (grey??) but if it's similar to the Rogers CGN3 (black box) since it's a Hitron modem, then I don't recall there being any options for VPN. You'd have to set it up in bridge mode and use another computer or router. I can't remember the settings for my old Rogers modem since I just upgraded to the Rogers CODA and bridged it immediately to use my own router... sorry I can't be of much help here.

Appreciate your comments.
Have been using Windscribe PRO for a month now and fairly happy. 2 comments peaked my attention.
1.You have had faster speeds with some U.S. servers over CDN. servers .Which do you find faster?
I have speedtested both and cannot get a server which is much diff. from any other. ( in T.O area)
2. I know little about the SOCKS5 connection...do i have to use a seperate TORRENT service ? If so, where do i get info on this.
Thanks again

I bought windscribe 2 years ago but use it very little as I don't torrent much and don't really care about US netflix so can't comment on the speed of servers. However whenever i have used it i have only noticed marginal slow down of D/L speeds.

- When you get a pro account you can generate a Socks5 username and password. You would use this to setup a proxy in the torrent client (guides are given at windscribe for popular clients).

1. Usually US West or US Central work better for me. I'm in Toronto as well and normally all of the Toronto servers are super super slow for me. I'm not sure why that is but I find it odd since Windscribe is based in Richmond Hill... I would think any of the GTA servers would be faster. Even Montreal is a bit faster for me (but still much slower than the US servers). US Windflix and UK Windflix server speeds are ok. Sometimes the quality is a bit low but I try to force it to use a better stream with an additional Chrome plugin for Netflix (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... phoc?hl=en).

2. You can input the settings depending on your torrent client; see here for the SOCKS5 profile generator: https://windscribe.com/getconfig/socks and the bottom of this page: https://windscribe.com/guides

Newbie VPN Question:

I would prefer to set up on the router, as this way my Samsung Smart TV and other devices on the network will be routed through the VPN. Phones would take less of a hit on battery life as well, I imagine (I have an ASUS router where I can set up a VPN).

I'm wondering if this is the best approach, as both me and my wife need to log in to our work VPNs on occasion. I'm thinking the double whammy is really going to slow things down.

Unless you're running pfsense on an old desktop computer or some other higher end equipment, you do NOT want to run the VPN on your routers.

Most commercial routers aren't powerful enough to handle the encryption overhead and you're just slowing down your entire connection.

That being said, some routers also allow you to do selective routing. So, you can still use the router as a VPN client but only selected devices go through the VPN

I am not a fan of Windscribe, but for this price, I bought it as it might come in handy sometime over the next 3 years for something. My main VPN is ExpressVPN.

I certainly would not install it on my main router due to the service's underperformance and potential privacy issues. However, if you daisy chain routers, such as one specifically for watching Netflix or other US services, that could very well work (for as long as it lasts... and I'm not keeping my hopes up).

Promo code takes down the "Lifetime" subscription down to $37.95 ... which isn't that bad at all. It was a well-received deal @ $29.40 USD late last year, according to a 68 (!) page thread on SD forums.

I bought this 2 hours ago, and since then, windscribe.com has been down. Haven't been able to setup my account.
Not a good sign.

Just got this few hours ago and tried basic stuff. The speeds are acceptable. I'm sure there are faster VPN services but honestly if you just want something for those odd times when you can't visit certain websites or can't view some videos on youtube which are geo locked, it'll do just fine. Can't really complain about $12 for 3 years. :)

Stupid newbie question about using a VPN at work.

In order to get on the net, we have to enter proxies in our browsers at work but so many sites are blocked. Is a VPN going to help me get around those work proxies? I don't have admin rights to Windows so can't install anything...

Perhaps. I don't know where you work but any half competent IT person can see you're using a VPN and that in of itself could be an issue depending on the company.

Nemlack wrote: FYI I work for a law firm in downtown Toronto, and I routinely help one particular lawyer send out Cease and Desist letters to people who bit torrent movies from the studio who is a client of ours. (I have to do a mail merge to around 10,000 letters that then get e-mailed out.) The Internet Service Providers supply our law firm with the user's IP addresses, so yes if you are using bit torrent, then having something like SOCKS5 or a VPN would be a good idea.
lol, wut? You might be doing something illegal. What you said is not right and I hope you're just not a technical person who misunderstands the situation rather than engaging in fraud. What you mean, is that you email the ISP, not people. You also mean some sort of Internet security company (Ie, IP-Echelon), NOT the Internet Service Providers. So I think what you're doing is sending out 10,000 emails to half a dozen abuse@ISP.com or copyright@ISP.com. Also, they are notices of infringement, not Cease and Desist.

The ISP DOES NOT supply the IP to the law firm, the law firm (more accurately the technical company the studio hired) needs to supply the IP addresses TO the ISP so the ISP knows WHICH ACCOUNT the IP was bound to at the time of alleged infringement. Then the ISP passes along the message to the account contact. The law firm has no idea who the user is in the first place, only an IP. They need the ISP to find out who the actual user is. I don't even know if the ISP is allowed to tell the law firm who the user is, as that would be a violation of Canadian privacy rules (requires a court order), part of the reason this infringement stuff hasn't gone anywhere. This is often why these infringement notices want the user to contact them and basically volunteer them payment for the infringement. And why you can ignore them right now without much consequence.

*pulls up previous infringement notices from Shaw*

Body contains the forwarded email from the 'copyright holder'.
Here is Shaw's info page, which states:
Why have I received this notification?
You have received a copyright notification as Shaw has been notified by a rights holder that your Internet Protocol (IP) address has been associated with an alleged copyright infringement, and Shaw is legally obligated to forward a copy of the content owner’s notice.

Content owners, not Shaw, monitor various websites that use sharing services and inform us when a Shaw IP has been associated with a possible copyright infringement.

Has my information been provided to the rights holder?
Shaw will not provide any information regarding customers' accounts to rights holders without a Canadian court order directing us to do so.

It would be common sense to block common VPN ports. Given the level of firewalling in place, and you know your admin is competent, you likely can't (without more technical skill) and you'd probably be violating company policies and get caught. There are ways of doing VPN over port 80/443, but I'm not sure what your options are with limited tech knowledge and no admin rights.
