If you're new to Stadia, you get a $10 voucher to apply to any game of your choice, in addition to a free month of Pro. No subscription is required to play any games you buy and there are no queues like GFN.
I'm debating buying this ($10 is almost no brainer territory) but some of the reviews make it sound like you need to pay micro transactions to advance in the game which turns me off. Thoughts?

Yes, but only at 1080p resolution and in stereo. To play any titles in 4K or 5.1 audio requires an active Pro subscription.

yeah you can play games you've purchased, but I believe the "free" pro ones you lose.

That’s correct. No 4K, HDR, or surround sound unless you subscribe.
