Is the 5500U a good price for the specs? Not looking to game on it except some smaller games

Pretty good for the price. I Grabbed one yesterday from store as backup as my cat decided to play footsie with a fresh crema laden latte I just made all over my existing laptop. This is now in bits drying out and I am working on each module with IPA. Currently building Win 10 on the Staples one now. Screen is decent.

I would bet my left foot this will accept a 32GB SODIMM, totalling 36GB of RAM.

Over the years, people have said this, that, or the other system couldn't accept more than 16GB (or 8GB). I said yes, very likely it could, and I was right each and every time. Folks were almost going to rip my head off despite proving right during the N4020 laptop thread I posted a while back.

It's rare to find systems with a lockout for high capacity SODIMMs, it's extra work to lockout a small minority of users engaging in gargantuan RAM upgrades.

We know the 5500U is a beast, on par with the 4700U, so it's nice to see it hit new and refreshing price lows. This isn't the hottest deal just yet, but it's trending in the right direction.

God bless, gentlemen.

I'll agree that it will likely run fine with a 32GB stick, but only 8GB of the total 36GB would run in dual channel and we know Ryzen benefits with dual channel RAM.

IMO adding an 8GB stick for a total of 12GB is probably the max people should add when only 1 slot is upgradeable. 8GB in dual channel and 4GB in single channel, unless of course you know you need the extra RAM even if in single channel.

I was of the understanding that you need to have two identical sticks of RAM (ie 4+4, 8+8 etc) for dual-channel. Have I missed something, or is the split you described a new capability in Ryzen processors?

Yeah, and honestly it is not new. My IBM T60 (Core Duo, not Core 2(until I upgraded it, heh)) supports a max of 3GBs RAM regardless of if you've got 4 or 64 bits or whatever apparently, so I'm running a 1 and a 2GB stick, and it's dual channel according to every software I've used. Pretty damn cool. Also, ryzen APUs seem to dedicate (HARD dedication, none of that dynamic rubbish) like 2GBs of RAM for your Radeon. And on my Acer at least there's apparently no **** way around it, and with only 8 GBs, it's just not great. 8GB is fine, but having only 6 available at all times even when nothing's running tends to be very inconvenient
moto g 5g, on LineageOS (i broke it cuz the otterbox case is a loose joke and gorilla glass is a luxury for motorola) moto g8 power, on public mobile's 113$ with tax 12GB plan/3 mths

Ugh I would've pulled the trigger if it supported USB-C charging.
