The Front LEDs can also be disabled from the router settings with Merlin firmware.

I believe this router has an encrypted bootloader which limits the router to Merlin or stock firmware.

I've been using this router for a few months and it's excellent with OpenVPN.

Really depends on your needs. I wanted a router to watch USA Netflix, Vudu, and Fandango on my TV.

The r7000 and Asus RT-AC68u were too slow for me when running OpenVPN since it doesn's support hardware acceleration with OpenVPN.

Seems like custom firmware would've solved that problem. I never bothered because I don't need VPNs anymore.

The cheaper priced RT-AC68U is a solid performer as well if one doesn’t need the extra processing power (mine is super stable with the stock firmware and 20+ devices - I use the VPN from time to time but no other features).
