If you need range extender, you probably can afford to get a proper mesh networks. No 5g is really limiting it's usage.

Can't beat the price if you need basic wifi extender and a built in switch.
That's 30 minutes away, I'll be there in 10.

the power consumption alone wouldn't make this worth it even if you had extra ethernet ports and wifi in your old PC.

Not everyone who has a car wants to build the car. Not everyone who fancy a steak wants to kill their own cow.

These "build your own" comments...WTF. Some, if not most, people just want to use the service (switching, routing and wifi AP) and get going.

Really, not everyone is looking to start [home network] civilization from scratch.

Can you imagine:

2. Speakers deal - Hey, make your own.
3. Pizza deal - Hey, bake your own.

Ha this is the perfect fix for my dual band ac asus that actually can't do 2.4 for more than a minute before it goes AWOL.

I haven't looked much into it but I heard like an old PC would be 4x the power of a high end router so maybe with the custom OS you have to install you could limit the tdp?

Either way a router uses around 5$ a year in electricity

An old PC would use about 50$ like if it was running at 100w 24/7

You can get like 30w PC's for cheap or even lower that will outperform high end routers easily

This little guy I ran tomato from it, and used it for testing/logging.
fun thing, not sure if it'll be good enough for full out main router though.

Avoid...ports themselves are 10/100. Not even gigabit. Made the mistake a couple years ago.
