[Staples] Canon® EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Telephoto Zoom Lens - $199 (50% off!)

Staples has a smoking hot deal on the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens - half price until November 18, now $199.25 (Save $200). The item # is 241037

The ad says it's with the purchase of a camera, but I was in the Burlington store earlier today and noticed it at $199. When I asked the rep they said that it was that price on sale, and no camera purchase is required.

They also had a deal on the EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens - item # is 176666 ($129 after $100 rebate) and the EF 75-300mm USM lens - item # is 697322 ($179 after $100 rebate). Doesn't look like it's available online, so you'll have to go in-store.

Cheers!

EDIT: VALID AGAIN UNTIL DECEMBER 16 - GO GO GO !

I called a couple stores and both said must be with a camera purchase. Perhaps better to go in store for better luck.

Should probably put YMMV in the title.

Hot deal if you can get it!

Just went back to my local store and took a pic - here you go (proof):

How hot is this really? I see this lens around $240 on Amazon.com (US)... and $215 - $250 on Ebay?

The original prices at staples are inflated. Think I paid 175 at Amazon.ca.

Are you sure the one you got off amazon.ca is the STM version?
STM vs non-STM is quite different, which is why the price difference.

It's true, they are different. And the only difference is that the STM is silent and won't screw up your video; optically they are the same as well as their speed - the difference is so minor that 99% of users won't see it.

do you have a bigger picture...?

Also, are you able to apply the staples coupons to this? I don't see an online listing for it.

There is a slight difference optically too (STM is better) but most users won't notice it.

I don't think you read up about the new lens if you think STM is the only difference.

Well, it's up to you what to think, but I would take an opportunity to educate oneself. You can start with this article that talks about the lens optics, http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses ... mm-stm.htm and if you don't like Ken's reviews, you can look at others.

To your point I left out the fact that the STM offers manual override all the time, which some people may find useful. So, I will change my statement. 95% of people won't see a difference or won't use any of the differences between the lenses, so practically unless you use it for video work, really it's not worth the extra money.

I would buy the STM over the non STM if I found it for around $175 for sure.

Just purchased one in Regina for this price. No signs, but asked to scan tag and it was $199. No mention of needed dslr purchase. Thanked.

Is this advertised so we could price match or only in store special?

Thanks OP,
snagged one from my local staples, no sign saying that you needed to purchase a camera, no hassle whatsoever.
