I run a 5700x and 3060Ti on a 500W PSU with a bunch of USB stuff plugged in.

If you can afford a 4090, you can afford the corresponding PSU. But most people don’t need those insane PSUs.

I plan to get a quality 450W next time
Or just buy all the parts for a new build in the future and then only buy what you need for your build with no room for upgrades.
A lot of good PSU come with ~10 year warranty, so they can be used in another build later in life hence why I'd get a 850w. I currently have a 750w but if I wanted to upgrade my GPU, I'd also need to upgrade the PSU and maybe the case too.

I don't normally like to comment on things like this, but please don't go saying things like this without being informed.

Let's take a decently high end system (Ryzen 5950x + RTX 3070) as an example. The 5950x peak use is around 140W while the RTX 3070 is around 220W. If we add in motherboard (let's say around 50W assuming it's a X570 chipset) and maybe another 20W for fans and peripherals, you're still under 500W at peak load. A 750W PSU is more than enough to power such a system and have lots of room to spare. For machines that don't even use a dedicated GPU, you can use a 400W PSU and still be more than fine. Even if we go with a very high end system (7900x + 4080), you're still only peaking at around 650W.

It's more imperative to buy a good/decent quality PSU more than raw wattage value. It doesn't have be 80 Gold/Platinum and be a Tier 1, but a 80 Bronze from a known reputable brand is perfectly fine for most common systems. There is no need to go overkill if you're aware of the components in your system and pair it with the proper PSU to power it.

Please don't get suckered in by marketing. There are systems that do need 750W+, but they're only for the most extreme systems that 99% of the public will never build/use. The vast majority of common gaming/home computers rarely need more than 600W, let alone 750W.

I have this PSU and have been running a EVGA RTX 3090 card on a Ryzen 9 3900x CPU without issues. Not the latest but still 2 high-end components. Those 2 draw about 500W total, so I still have 250W to spare for other components such as AIO cpu cooler, RGB fans and SSDs which is more than enough.

My current power supply is almost 10 years old. Not sure if it has a 10 year warranty but if it does, its about hit it.
What is the warranty on the CX750M?

I don't think my system has ever hit 200W, never mind the 750W capacity it has. My needs are under 400W which is why i will right size my next power supply.

So is the CX750M still a good deal or will it be obsolete soon?

If I were to buy a 4060 ti in the future would my 650 be enough? I'm not sure how to tell.

Most likely, but you can go to pc partpicker, put in all your parts and it will give an estimated wattage.

This PSU should be plenty based on leaks suggesting the 4060 Ti will have a TDP of 160W. You could easily run a 500-600W PSU and still have power to spare.

My computer uses about 50W idling and under 150W at full CPU.
I tested it with a KillaWatt energy meter.

I also have no graphics card, just onboard graphics.

I didn’t suspect it but I’m switching to a RTX 3080 12gb, which needs 3 8 pin connectors. Can this power supply power it? Ie. does it have those connectors?

Yup it has 4 pcie connectors, that’s expected with PSUs of this wattage.
