Usually no, the CC company will want you to try to resolve this before they move in.

They admitted that it was a system error that allowed the coupon to go through, but that they are allowed to charge my card without telling me in this case (unbelievable!!)

They said my options were to accept the product or return it.

I went with my own option #3, I called my credit card company and they will be disputing the charge. THe credit card company rep I talked to can't understand what Staples is thinking.

Only downside is that this will probably take awhile before I get my money back.

Needless to say I will never shop at Staples again.
Smart thing to do...last time I had a dispute was buying from ebay, the guy from New York never sent me the stuff, I waited a month and both ebay and paypal won't help me since the amount was only US$20, I called PC Mastercard and they sent me a form, after filling it and returned it by mail, my money was back in my account within a week. Anyway I was surprise that Staples will do a thing like that, it breaches their merchant agreement between Visa/Mastercard and whatever CC companies, they simply can't charge people money without approval, it stated cleary in the agreement.

I hope you can post here how you exactly approach your CC company so other will know what to do in case Staples are going to charge us as they do to you. I noticed they charged me the amount on 7/Feb but nothing show up after that yet (the $20) so I'll be monitoring my account to see what'll happen next.

I wish I had more tiem to raise a stink about this, but I don't. I wil let the credit card peopel handle it.

most likely your CC company will do it for you, i remember i got an unknown charge on my account when my friend purchased a 3-month account to an online game. The company added some fee on and dated it wrong, so i made a dispute saying that i didn't know what the extra charge was. they said they would look into it, and i got a refund back on it.

I posted a while back.
THis happened to both me and my mother.

Over a month or so later my mother had a charge for about $100 ..

She called staples and they said it was for using too many coupons on one purchase.

Even though she called and the staples rep allowed her to use 3/4 different coupons. The would not reverse the charge.

It happened to me as well later with a 360 controller. Many of you might get surprises from staples over the coming weeks.

I am surprise that Staples is doing things like this, if they were a small merchant, they would have already banned by the CC company, oh well, big corp rules.
