I have a 8710. No issues the last two years. I use 123ink, the printer is not happy about the non-hp cartridges but prints away fine.

I have the 8210.

When you install the drivers, make sure you uncheck the box that says something to the effect of letting the printer check and update the firmware automatically. It's one of those updates that added the third party ink lock.

Yes, it comes something called starter cartridges, which can print around 100 pages in black and 100 in colour (based on the CSR at staples)
The CSR at staples told me the printers don't come with ink but then I searched on HP's website and apparently the starters can print 800 pages?

yes this was quite the fiasco.

Fortunately they did release a firmware update that resolved the issue.

123ink also provided return shipping and refund/exchange for cartridges that did eventually work.

so far we have bought a few times: https://www.123ink.ca/p-357964-952xl-co ... ch%23952xl

and i have also tried this one once from amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Novajet-Remanufac ... way&sr=8-6

I'm not really sure which one is better, the 123ink or the amazon one...

I used 123ink in my old officejet 8600 for years... eventually it did bite the bullet .

I am sure original HP ink is better for printer maintanence and longevity..

but i dont notice any difference in print quality. I figure I will just replace my 8720 with another one, or the next model, if the printer ever dies.

My 8600 died after 4 years of excessive printing and using 123inks.

It didnt really die, but something happened to the blue and no matter what I tried I couldnt get the blue to print without spots or blotches.

The 8720 is much better quality than the old 8600..

I have not used original HP genuine ink in my 8720 since the original starter carts it came with. Its been about 1.5 - 2 years.. and the printer has no issues.

EDIT: FYI: I only paid 159.99 for the 8720 almost 2 years ago at Bestbuy. I think even at that price it is a good buy, but if you can do a trade in of an old printer and get it for $60 thats a great deal IMO! You cant really go wrong!

You can but that would just be regular web order...on the website for me I can order online and pick up in the store in 2hours it says...BUT keep in mind this may be regular web order so you might not be able to do any trade in if your planning too.

The good thing is it does show store stock...ymmv

good luck... I went to the store and performed the trade in ...I was using a officejet 8700 pro...gave that to my brother...had a junk 6500 series officejet that had a bad lcd display lying around (common issue)..traded that in and got my self a new 8720 for $79.09 taxes in :)

cheers

Went to my local staples tonight to get the 8720. I actually much prefer the look and form factor of the 8710 for my needs, so I'm sold on it. The screen is really the only selling feature for me on the 8720 and I'd rarely use it.

Guy said I could buy the printer online and have it shipped to my house. Then just bring in the receipt with a printer. (broken, working, no power cable or any cords needed... Could even be smashed) and they will refund you the difference.

Buying the 8710 right now!

(...) But I do have a Black and white laser jet-so I see your point.

Thankfully, white ink is cheap, right? Face With Tears Of Joy
