$256/TB as well. Don't really get more expensive. A $63 256gb would be cheaper per gb.

i'm looking for a 32gb drive to store some old files... will only be writing onto the drive once in my lifetime, and then it's read only... so a cheaper price for slow write and fast read speeds work great!

to everyone else - not everyone needs 256GB drives, and of course the bigger the drive, the cheaper it is per GB... that's true with everything in life... you can't sh*t on a deal by saying "it's cheaper per unit if you buy a million units at wholesale prices!"

Dunno, seems like a pretty common use case to me. I also use this sort of cheap drive for one-off backups and other write-once situations like sending big files to someone where I don't care whether or not I get the drive back. In those cases you don't need high capacity and speed is less important.

There are better deals for price/capacity, but I actually prefer these to use as OS installation drives. The storage capacity is irrelevant for this use case, and I would even rather pay slightly less for 8GB drives if they were still produced.

Not sure what you're talking about, there's about 1000 option for 8gb on amazon, $5/drive

Just remember flash memory is a bad choice for backups since it erases itself after some time if left unpowered.

Let me add an asterisk. There are no *reputable* brands selling lower cost drives.

For me, it is not worth the reliability issues/possible boot drive compatibility issues saving a small amount of money going with a no name Chinese re-branded drive.

I use an external hard drive in conjunction with File History and scheduled image backups. Mine is similar to this one:
WD 4TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive.

I also use Onedrive/Google Drive as a secondary cloud backup for basic files-only works in progress.

Not necessarily. SD cards sometimes specify they will keep data for that long but an SSD can be as short as one year.
