[Staples] Moto Z Play - $379

https://www.staples.ca/en/abc/product_2 ... CA_1_20001

$379 isn't flaming hot, but decent. There are $20 off $200 coupons floating around that should make it $359. This is an excellent phone that checks off a lot of boxes:

- Amoled display
- Excellent battery life
- headphone jack
- micro sd slot
- type c + quick charge
- decent ram/processor
- good daylight camera. Low light isn't great.
- Android O promised + good custom ROM support

$379 is what the msrp should be. Thinking this was ever worth nearly $700 is asinine

Yeah the prices for some of these SD625 phones are completely absurd.

Get this phone. The battery life alone is worth it.

Anyone have any comments between this and the Xiaomi A1 or Moto GS5 Plus?

I got this phone 64GB model from China (banggood) for $330 CAD after exchange rate and I totally love it. The battery life is superb, if you are a light user, you can get 1 week of battery life, and if you are a power user, you can expect around 3 days of battery life. I hated having to charge every night and the Moto Z Play is amazing in this regard. The processor is a technically mid-range CPU however it feels like a more powerful one, its speedy, and no lag doing day to day stuff. Sound quality is great too, booming bass with headphones and very good clarity. The camera people were bashing on this phone, I don't understand why, the camera is very good, its no iPhone or Galaxy, but I've had no complaints with the camera quality, its got a good image sensor. Both photos and 4K video recording, I have no complaints with.

If you can get the Staples coupon to lower the price, I would strongly suggest you buy the phone in Canada because the versions the Chinese e-tailers are selling are hacked bootloader versions despite the package being sealed with stickers, meaning you will receive no OTA updates to later Android and programs such as Netflix and Android PAY will NOT work on these (fail) because they have been technically rooted. Shady for these e-tailers to sell such a thing without informing customers, until they were forced to. Despite never being able to update through OTA with the Chinese Moto Z Play disguised as an international version, I still love this phone and will definitely buy another Moto phone in the future.

Is there an LED indicator light on this phone? Or just that crappy Motorola active display feature?

What is the difference for $110 more?Confused Face
The other one is the Moto Z (non Play), which is supposedly the higher end version. It has a better processor, more ram, higher res screen etc, but its battery is smaller and IMO its the worse of the two phones.

It does not have a notification light.

I came with a phone with a notification light and thought it was weird not to have one, but every time something comes through, the display lights up (and vibrates) to let you know. I eventually got used to it.

What are they nuts?

Bestbuy is on sale for $435 but from another seller (Pipertech?), would their price match qualify?Neutral Face
Moto Z Play in the OP is the middle end edition. It has works specs (still very good though) but better battery life.

You linked the Moto Z which is the high end one.

I would just go with the Moto Z Play. It's better for the average daily user.

I think the power light can be used for notifications if you root the phone. I have the phone running LineageOS and the led does light up for notifications. Its a single color though from what I can tell.

Ya, not sure, the light beside the camera is only for when the phone is charging

No comparison. Get the Moto Z Play. Great specs, awesome battery life.
I've had 3 Zenfone's. Not impressed. I think they are built very cheaply (discovered by dropping every phone).

I got this phone back in February when Koodo still had it on their store for $0 down. The battery life is amazing, and the phone is plenty fast for anything I use it for. The only downside I find is that the camera sucks in low-light conditions, but other than that I love this phone.
