[Staples] Seagate Backup Plus Hub 6 TB ($100... $16.67/TB) [YMMV-in store pickup]

This shuckable SMR (model #STEL6000100) may not be for everyone, but this comes out to $16.67/TB. As if this posting, there are still a small handful of these external drives in clearance at some of the Staples stores.

Thanks OP, been looking for a sweet deal on big storage. Placed an order for in-store pickup, hopefully it goes through!

I’m pretty out of touch with HDD technology these days. Would this be very good to setup on my network with partitions for a TimeMachine server and one for some media backup?

I know I need a NAS because my library keeps growing, and my current USB disks are at capacity, and I would love some network access

But with this, I can push that problem to a couple more years later. Future me, that's your problem now

UPDATE: placed the order but item was actually out of stock so they cancelled some time later

Thanks OP. Picked one up in store this afternoon. There was another person buying one in the line ahead of me.

It means that this type of drive of drive is better for use cases where you plan to write data once; reading data will be fast, but rewriting data after that initial write will be painfully slow.

Oh right, there was a controversy a while back where WD silently switched one of their models to SMR. I just never can remember all these acronyms.

Nearest one that stock track reports having 1 in stock is 70km away from me. Sad.

Would rather have gotten the 6tb, but the 4tb is still in stock for online ordering.

Does this deal still hold up? There has been a bunch of NAS drives on sale recently and is comparable to this price.
