Tips and Tricks

Head Rest Mod
Advisable for folks between 5'10" and 6'2", any taller and you're best recommended not to install the head rest.

Gel Seat Cushion - [Option 1]
The seat cushion is very useful for (1) long-term comfortable seating and (2) distributing your weight so the mesh doesn't sag. Do not use the Option 1 seat cushion for your vehicle, it's known to get cold outside in winter.

Commentary
redflagdealsguy wrote: The Staples Hyken Chair: Value Proposition

A task chair designed for productive functional comfort.

1) Breezy and cool mesh keeps your bottom cool, and allows for easy air release.
2) The chair encourages upright posture.
2A) It's helped relieve mild back pain.
3) The head rest is good for folks up to 6'2" with the head rest mod, otherwise you can skip the install.
4) The gel seat cushion option improves seat comfort and distributes weight to avoid sagging.
5) Anecdotal: It's deployed across a few offices here with great success, using the gel seat cushion.
redflagdealsguy wrote: The Staples Hyken Chair isn't for everyone.

You're hearing some marginal complaints from two camps:
1) Folks who prefer luxurious comfort over practical and productive comfort.
2) Folks who don't know that the gel seat cushion is a thing.

If you fall into camp 2, a good gel cushion makes a big difference. If you're still not satisfied, you fall into camp 1.

I will never touch a $1,000 luxurious leather work chair again.

I got it over a year ago. The mesh is too hard for my butt and the headrest wouldn't fit me because I'm tall. I did take off the headrest and also try the hack. Didn't work for me.

I don't like the chair personally and I've switched to a high stool after using this for over a year. It really messed up my hips.

Bought this chair 2 years ago. Really uncomfortable. Potential for long-term back damage IMO. Tried adding the butt cushion to no avail. If you value your butt health, I strongly recommend that you spend more money to buy a better chair.

Thanks, OP. Have been waiting for this one.

Does anyone have a good illustration of the difference between the black and grey versions?

The images on the Staples site don't really give a good indication.

Looks like the Dexley is on sale for $167 as well, FYI.

Please do not buy this, I sat on this chair for 24/6 on a 6h to 8h per day, and the chair quality isn't good (lasted me 1 year and a half). First, the headrest broke, then the armrest and the mesh leaves a trace on your thigh when it is on a hot day if you don't have a ventilated room. If you want a cheap version of this, just go buy the Moustache from Shopper+.

The only good thing about this is if you want to smell your own fart.

I've been holding out an office chair, looks like its time to finally pull the trigger. Would someone recommend the Dexley over the Hyken?
Thanks for the upvote!

I'm surprised about the comments. Usually the only negative you see during Hyken threads are about the headrest o.O

Anyone know how the Dexley compares to the Hyken since that'll be on sale as well? Last I saw someone said it was an upgrade for the chair, but a downgrade below the chair, but it was still pretty new at the time.

Bro, it's okay. Let them figure it out for themselves.

Don't do it. Just don't do it.

I did not heed the warnings, I bought the chair as a result of some good reviews a year ago, reading many forums where the golden echelon of budget chair was the Hyken and IKEA Markus. Save your money, and invest in a good chair.

I'm looking to buy a good office chair, and the Staples Hyken has countless positive reviews both on the Staples website as well as on Reddit and Youtube.
But seems everyone on RFD absolutely hates it to the point they're saying it causes health problems? Makes me seriously reconsider...
Which chairs would you recommend around this price point? ($300-500)

The chair's fine. I also don't use headrest. Should have made it more adjustable cause it bulks out.

If you're not sure whether it's a good chair or not, just go to staples and try it out yourself first. The 2 staples that I sometimes go to always have this chair on display.

That's what I did before I made the purchase.

I don't use cushion but a larger towel. It functions to keep dirt away from the chair.

Really confused by this thread because every other RFD thread has been super positive about the damned thing and suddenly it's worse than torture?

As I stated in my initial post I've switched to a high chair. It's helping my hips and forcing me to stand and use my standing desk more.

I wouldn't have noticed what this was doing to my body after I started running regularly. The main issue I've found is that it's a bucket system and it's mesh. So you're basically getting no ergonomic benefits and it's not even comfortable. What I've noticed is that my hips are stuck andimmobile. This chair is not forgiving for your body. It forces your hips into a really bad position

Honestly it could be astroturing. Chair felt okay for the first little bit but got worse over time. Maybe it took time for people to realize how badly they've been had.

Bought this chair in February based on rave reviews here on RFD and have been using it daily. It’s quite comfortable BUT the mesh is already sagging less than 3 months later because of terrible manufacturing quality (my weigh is less than 200 lbs) .... will contact Staples warranty to see what they have to say... not sure I would recommend this chair ...

Given so many negative reviews here, I may be getting downvotes but I am pretty happy with my Staples Hyken Ergonomic Mesh Chair. I have been using it for almost a year. It is more confortable than any chair in my office or at home. But I am open to other chair options in the same price range.

I must have a fat ass cause this chair ain't hurting it tbh. I've had it for 2 years now and have no complaints. I'm under 200lbs though so maybe everyone who's complaining is much heavier?
