[Staples/TheSource/WM/BB/Costco] HP Inkjet wireless 3-in-One Instant-Ink Eligible Printers from $40

Deal Link:
Update 11/18/2023

Staples:HP DeskJet 2742e $40 (free 6 months printing with HP+)

WM: Deskjet 2742e $50 (free 6 months printing with HP+).

HP: Deskjet 2742e $55 (free 6 months printing with HP+).(+ additional $20 off for new newsletter subscribers) HP does PM but not sure if they will allow the coupon to be stacked with PM'ing.

All these printers are instant ink eligible and can be used with the free^* 15 pages a month plan.

Good luck

^ Free 15 pages a month tier has been available since 2017, as of October 5th 2020 many currently enrolled users have received the 60 days notice that the free tier is being phased out in Dec (replaced by a $1.25/15 pages tier with 45 pages rollovers), while there is currently no PSA to that effect and the free tier is still available for new enrollment please consider the status quo when signing up.
* Though the Office Jet PRO and Envy PHOTO series printers can't be self-enrolled for the free instant ink tier, many were successful having it enrolled by contacting HP support.

Per the official terms and conditions, you can't downgrade to the free tier from any paid tier (even these you get for free as part of the initial trial), with that said, there are no reports (so far) of anyone failing to downgrade by contacting HP instant-ink support and asking them to manually override the system.

Thread Summary
- Register for instant ink on this website

- Free trial months are not offered when you sign up at Instantink.com – only at 123.hp.com and the HP Smart app

- Some printers come with starters that don't count toward your INSTANT INK subscription page count and some printers come with INSTANT INK-READY starters which do count toward your page count. If you don't know which you have, wait until you get close to draining one of your cartridges before you enroll in instant ink to maximize "free" pages. TO BE CLEAR - If you have IIR cartridges, do NOT register your subscription yet, or it will automatically start the counter on your subscription monthly pages. This is what I did @bubble.tea. It seems the better way is to NOT register an account. Run down the cartridge first, then register. It appears, you will be fine in that case.

- The free tier is available only for select printers. Most current DeskJet, Envy and OfficeJet printers are included the Envy Photo, OfficeJet Pro and Tango printers are not. To find out if your printer qualifies for the free tier, go to https://instantink.hpconnected.com/r/re ... choice/new and select the printer your considering. Sometimes you might have to click/swipe left and right on the plans to see the free tier if it's available (especially on mobile).

- Pages on the free tier to do not "roll over". You can't save up a few months to have 45 pages available, sorry.

- The chat function isn't easy to find on the HP Instant Ink site - link: https://instantink.hpconnected.com/ca/e ... ch=unknown

- list of instant ink compatible printers (from hp.com) is not exhaustive as it doesn't account for all market variants, for the most accurate results just start the enrolment process and see if the printer you want is listed.

- HP is currently running a referral program for instant ink, where a new subscriber uses the referral code of an existing one and both get a free month of service. Please be advised that requesting/offering (hinting) referral codes is not allowed on RFD, but you can just use Google to find them as there are plenty of codes publicly posted around.

- if you cannot connect to the printer after you are using your company VPN, try the Eprint function.**

You want this to get on the instant ink plan for cheap. Furthermore, all 4 retailers have a no questions asked return policy, so you can buy and return if you hate it.

Didn’t know about the return policy, definitely will purchase one now! Also, after reading about the instant ink plan I’m still a bit confused, is it really cheaper than just buying regular ink cartridges or ink refil cartridges from say, 123ink? This is assuming I go with the $4/month 50 pages option? I don’t print much as I just finished school, so I’m just looking for something to print the odd resume or e-ticket

Is this a better deal than the HP Envy 4250 from a couple weeks ago? Still within return period for me. I don't print much at all I actually haven't even printed on it besides the test page

I have this gut feeling that HP is going to drop the free 15pg plan in a year or so...
Free rides don't last forever.
All these cheap printers that entered our homes and got on instant ink over the past 18 months is the "baiting" that will continue for the short term.
Then comes the familiar "As we continue to support our customers with this wonderful program blah blah blah blah...." HP will then force us to go on one of the paid subs...along with a "bonus" of first 3 months Free for switching within 30 days.
So for all of us who are currently on the free 15 pg plan:
If HP was to pull this say next month for example. Do you:
A. Pony up $4/month on the 50pg plan?
B. Cancel your subscription and buy off the shelf standard ink carts (or 3rd party/refills)?
C. Stop using the printer all together?

In all honesty, I would be inclined to pay the $4/month. Exactly what HP is betting on the vast majority of free subs would do.
...untill another year down the road when we get notice of a $1/month increase.

I have 2 printers on the free plan right now. Yet, for $30 I'm considering a 3rd for my parents house.

If you are an occasional user then refilling would be waste of money due to possible ink drying and printer head clogging .. etc.

The free for 15 pages a month with $1.25 for 10 pages overage should work fine for you.

It has been on since 2014 (IIRC), don't think its going anywhere esp. given that its a one way upgrade so a perfect trap to get people to sign up into paid plans after experiencing the convenience of ink subscriptions. Also there is a good chance free tier users going into overage net HP enough profit to cover the "15 pages free" for everyone.

I don't think it would be wise of them to just scrap the tier, if its no longer free then current overage "10 for $1.25" would make a perfect startup tier that many wouldn't mind signing up for.

Deskjets are not exactly your workhorse of printers, perfect for occasional use though (when coupled with instant ink plans) and you can cheaply get direct replacement warranty for them ($20 for 4 years at BB, $6 for 3 years at TheSource, $6 for 1 year at Staples), not to mention most credit cards will extended the manufacturer warranty to another year at no cost to you.

Which of these is the best (for very occasional use, no photos, mostly black and white, etc)? Or are they all basically the same model with different numbers?

The free plan was available starting 2017...they did not have the free 15pg. originally, at least not here in Canada. But you makes good points nonetheless... however I still remain skeptical of its long term availability though.

I was going to pick up one of these to go on the free plan as my 8 month 300/page free trial is about to run out on my Envy 5640. But I figured out that I could 'de-register' that and sign it up on the free plan under a new account. After that was done, I removed and re-inserted the Instant Ink cartridges and it's good to go (even though they said they would be shipping new cartridges).

Just a heads up for anyone that has an old printer that's been previously registered on an Instant Ink plan. :)

So to clarify for the Instant Ink program, as long as I only print 15 pages or less per month, I'll get free ink refills for the life of the printer?
