Are bookings charged directly by hotels? Wondering if this can stack with amex offers

On the left, the site for the Pac Rim in Vancouver. On the right, Hotels.com for the same room, same hotel, same nights. And that price does not include the "free nights" count I would get (essentially 10% back in credit) from booking through Hotels.com.

190 CAD more expensive for 175 CAD worth of VISA cards, before the 10% cash back of the Hotels.com Rewards Program.

EDIT: sorry, hotels had the wrong date in the original shot. fixed.

EDIT OF THE EDIT: Looks like my hotels.com had USD. Geez, I should be better prepped for posts...

So you end up paying 1k CAD more for 125+50+50 Visas.
While you might have the right idea, the left screenshot is for 3 nights, the right one is only for 2.

Do note that your hotels.com is quoting the price in USD vs CAD on the left. There is still a ~$180 difference, essentially paying for the gift cards.

For those unfamiliar with this annual promo...
"The first night qualifies for a $50, $75, $100 or $125 reward depending on hotel booked."
That means that you're not going to get $125 off a $130 room.

It's a graduated scale depending on your room price. The old BeVancouver (or whatever it was called) was so much better. Back then, you could indeed get $125 off a $130 room. With the latest promo, try to boost your deal in other ways.

For the night I looked into, I could only get $50 off $134. For $125 off, I had to book a room costing $269. Many other variations of course.

It really varies by hotel - I find the lower/mid end hotels are often the best bang for buck on these, and staying the one night is best for lowest cost.

Saying "NEVER" is completely incorrect. Since we're sharing examples:

True, never is a very black and white statement on my end and technically does not hold true (thus removed). As for your examples. Those could make total sense (barely though). I guess two nights would net you the best benefit vs. aiming to book a third night and get a mere $50.

I am a bit confused. Can you still qualify if you only book for a single night? Or is it minimum two nights?

The T&C’s seem to read like you may need 2 nights, but when I search for single nights it shows that the stay would qualify for a gift card. I do see it says “no minimum stay required” at least.

That's correct - you're taxed on the $189 - just as you would be booking direct, through Hotels.com etc...

Charge is billed by the hotel, so Amex offers for spend 250 get 50 by province and Marriott spend 200 get 50 will also stack

Status benefits will also apply if you have hotel status. Titanium member at Douglas (next to jw) a year ago got suite upgrade

Here's another example:

$19 cheaper on SVH than expedia, and you get a $100 Visa. There are good deals to be had here, if you're willing to put in 5 minutes of work instead of complaining and getting your currency/number of days wrong. This is literally the first one I tried.

One night is fine. The two night is how you get the up to $175 quoted ($125 + 50 for the second night).

This can be a good or a bad deal depending on the hotel, room type and dates of stay. Do your research. I booked a 3 night stay at the Coast Coal Harbour with this offer for much cheaper than I could find elsewhere. For other hotels it was cheaper for me to book direct at government rates. Btw you can use the gift cards as payment towards your stay

I don't think you know what you're talking about. The examples given clearly show that SVH is the better deal

Yeah, I also thought 2 nights was required. I emailed SVH and they confirmed a one night stay is eligible for the gift card promo.

i've used this offer twice in the past, both times with Starwood hotels, the Sheraton Wall Centre and Westin Bayshore, which are now Marriott. They were both charged directly by the hotel so i got stay credits and status benefits.

however, i am finding that this stay vancouver offer shows the sheraton at $179 but when you click on it the price goes to $249. Bait and switch? the Sheraton has a very good deal for "locals" which is BC residents and perhaps alberta and some other places. that rate includes parking which is over $50/day with taxes so a significant savings.

maybe there are good deals with this stay vancouver offer but as always, do your due diligence.

A random August mid week stay came to $369.00 + tax = $434.47 including $125 VISA GC

While Marriott's official website, I can get the same room for $277 + tax = $326.15 INCLUDING
- $50 resort credit to spend at restaurants
- Self parking
- late check out without any kind of Status
- upgrade upon arrival, also without any kind of status

YMMV But based on couple of quick comparisons so far, this Stayvancouverhotel has quite a bit of mark up. The Tourism Richmond one offer much more fair pricing.
