Steel chimney removal.

Hi.
We decided to remove our corner fireplace for now since we are doing our hardwood floors and also gain the extra floor space in the family room as well as in the walk in closet upstairs. I started doing some of the demo.

It's a wood burning insert.. so just steel piping and steel chimney on the roof.... see image

My contractor said he can remove the fireplace and all the steel sections inside the house and we can leave the attic and roof portion ?? Is this ok ?

Now I'm thinking of getting rid of the exterior chimney and close the hole and shingle the roof as well.. ( ie get it all done) once and for all. Any idea who would do this part?? My guy won't go to the roof :) and he does not do shingles etc. How much would this extra part cost. Any recommendations .. thanks

Finally since this is just steel tubing I don't think we need permits as we are not touching any structure.

Too small a job for many/most roofers so why not leave it till the shingles need replacing? Then it would be very simple as they redo the roof and all the shingles would match.

I'm more looking for someone to remove the top chimney portion...

I can get someone to do the shingle repair ... yes its small and I'll pay a bit more ..

The hard part will be to coordinate the two to show up at the same time as I don't want a gaping hole in my roof ...

try these guys but.... I'd say good luck. They can google map your address and give you an estimate over the phone. You'd be hard pressed to find someone to do this on the cheap. I'd leave it there and when the roof needs replacing, have it removed then.

If you go this route, you'll want to make sure your guy blows some foam insulation (NOT just stuff it fibreglass) in the remaining piece of chimney. This is a pretty obvious thing, but you never know.

You need to get rid of the entire thing, or at minimum cap the chimney on the roof to prevent critters etc. from getting in there.

Bottom line - do it right. It's a small roofing repair job. Have your contractor remove everything including the section in the attic.

Call a roofing repair company to come remove the chimney/patch/shingle the roof. Probably $500.
