Suggestion for a good quality lawn mower?

My lawn in the back is thick, seems to retain a lot of moisture, and my back yard is slanted and bumpy.

budget is like $400 Canadian. What I was looking at.

https://www.rona.ca/en/self-propelled-g ... 1-02225221

https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.lawn ... 28402.html

http://www.sears.ca/en/gas-mowers/3-in- ... lt&start=1

I heard honda engines are reliable and would be open to spending a bit more for one. I'd like it to have a side discharge because my grass gets clumpy.

I bought this one today and used it when I got home. I got the Honda engine (reason for me to get it) and it is self propelled too.

Lowes is having all their lawn mowers at 15% discount now (until may 17)

I also found there is a manuf rebate of $50 for my model too

At end, net cost would be $600 (taxes and mir incl)

thanks for the suggestion, it's a bit out of my price range though and the reviews are not promising, the mulching issue people describe is similar to the problem I am currently having. My grass grows fast and is always high in moisture content.

I forgot to look at lowes, thanks for the heads up about their sale.

OP, personally I'd go with a used toro, or other brand commercial mower if a large lot, consider the homeowner grade toro/lawnboy if you don't have much to cut. Lots of the independent retailers take trades from the commercial clients, and will have them to sell - you'll get a far better machine, if you can handle something that has been used.

I rehabbed an old commercial lawnboy, cutting just my lawn (figure it's designed for 20 lawns a day * 5 days a week - is way more then I'll ever use,) so it will last basically forever and parts availability is still solid.

I don't see the point of AWD/FWD on a mower, seems like it's adding unnecessary weight and complexity. With the RWD it's easy to lift the front wheels and spin the mower on the rear's to turn it, much less effort then the other types would take.

The Husqvarna 7021P push mower gets good reviews. I recently purchased it and it seems like a good mower with the Honda engine.

I have the Cub cadet as listed in the rona link. Had it for 9 years now and amazed at how, even after a long winter it starts with 1 pull. I took it for a service last year for the first time ever and it came back good as new. Highly recommend.

Sold out :(

edit: nope, just stumbled upon a local dealer that has it at $10 less than lowes. Might just go with them and help support a local business.

Your local dealer can get you a mower. Have you been in there? Even the Ag focused dealers have the small stuff including a full line of Stihl equipment.

Edit: your local dealer is Green Tractors. They are a full line dealer. Seriously, go check them out. Ive been to that location in a previous life.

I recently bought the 1st one on your list, only used it once and somewhat disappointed in it's power. My old mower used to be able to go over anything and suck it up, this one won't pick up pine cones on the ground. I will adjust the height next time I use it but so far not impressed with the Poulan Pro.

Buy a used commercial Honda mower with aluminium deck and have it tuned up. Will cost you close to $300 with tune up. Will last you life time and will easily outrun anything you buy new at CT / HD/ Lowes. Make sure it is a commercial version not the retail version. Brand new cost about $1000. I bought mine new for $850, 6 years ago. Always starts with 1 pull. Considering the quality, if I were to buy again, I will buy a used one.

Where can I find used commercial mowers? Kijiji?

Unfortunately, yes. Keep scanning craigslist and Kijiji. Or the lawnmower repair shops. There are folks on kijiji that buy non-working lawn mowers and fix them for resell. I would suggest visit some repair shops and see what they have. The one below seem to have some inventory.

+1
I own this mower for the last 3 seasons (going on its 4th) and it still runs like a dream. Oil changes every spring and running the fuel out til empty prior to winter storage is all the maintenance it has required up til this point. If I had to buy one now, I'd probably buy it again or a very nice battery operated one (if there is such a thing).

bought the Ego LM2102SP, had the cozzy blower, added a bare bones trimmer... expensive, but it's a nice combo; he ease of maintenance, storage, cutting quality, not having to worry about gas and oil, and run-time (most gas mowers won't last more than an hour without filling up either, and if you can't mow a quarter acre in less than 60 minutes, something's wrong), ... and the self propel feature I use more than I thought i would, have kind of a bumpy yard, it's pretty nice. no regrets on the purchase at all.

I purchased this mower and so far I'm extremely happy with it. Runs smooth, starts easy and has decent power.
