supplyhouse.com - any canadians buy from them? if so, how?

Hi,

Once the border opens back up, I want to make a fairly large purchase from supplyhouse.com. (I CAN'T find a supplier that wont charge me list, or tells me to call a contractor)

I was planning on using my Kinek address in Niagara falls NY and my paypal account to get around the issue of supplyhouse not shipping to canada and not accepting Canadian credit cards.

My question: Does anyone have any success stories buying from supplyhouse? I'd hate to wait for the border to open back up only to find out that my evil plan wont work...

Markham
I bought something from then recently. Had it shipped to Shippsy Niagara Falls warehouse and brought over to Markham where I can pick it up. No issues.

I used my Paypal to pay them.

Here is my everything you need to know about Shippsy thread.

I bought a mini split about 6 years ago from Supplyhouse. They were awesome to deal with. Bought a 24k btu w/3 indoor units. Sounds like you’re buying something similar :)

Had it shipped to CBI USA and went and picked it up. If the border opens this is probably easiest.

In the meantime, Shippsy is great. Use them all the time. Look up duties and taxes first before ordering to get a good idea of what you’ll be paying. There is HST on most products coming in, but I believe AC units have a specific duty also ($100 per unit I think??)

Shippsy fees are approx $7 per box which is very reasonable, especially for large boxes!

Hey BHA1,

I'm building a hydronic floor for my workshop. Some of the quotes I'm getting around here are sometimes 2x + of what I'm seeing on supplyhouse.

I've found a good source for Electrical, but HVAC suppliers for some reason believe they are selling classified military technology too advance for the commoners. Neutral Face

I tried an online calculator to figure out duty\tax but the categories were very general. I figure the worst I could possibly do is break even with a local purchase.

I used to buy from them all the time before they stopped shipping to Canada. Now I've switched over to www.pexhouse.com for a lot of plumbing parts especially ProPex fittings. Not sure if they'd have what you need but worth a try.

Yes - because contractors aren't charities and have to earn a living and cover large overheads. If they charge less for materials, the labor just goes way up to compensate.
But if you can do it yourself to save money, more power to you.
Hvac advice warning - inaccurate information on forum, vested interests in selling builder's equipment. Selling dealer-only brands without being authorized is a red flag. Report to CRA if offered no tax cash-deal. If it's 2 good to b tru, it is.

There's something to be said for honesty in billing.

Silently marking up materials is misleading customers into blaming manufacturers for contractor overheads.

If a contractor needs to charge X dollars to keep their business going, then charge X dollars. Don't pretend to charge X * 0.75 dollars and make up the difference by blaming equipment costs.

It's actually normal for hvac contractors to do 100% markup and add $100+ per hour labor on top of that or for new install just roll it all into one price. Keep in mind that they have to stock a lot of stuff on trucks which may not be used for months/years yet still pay upfront.
Keep in mind DIY'ers aren't the supplier's customers; there's a markup every step of the way.

Just the way things are I guess.

I like pexhouse, but i was turned off because I got a radiant heat manifold for $40-50 cheaper at Desco. BUT, they charged me list for special fittings for it - which is why I created this post. :)

Desco = ~19.99?, pexhouse = 13.48. I had to but a few sets of these. not the end of the world for overall cost, but it just rubbed me the wrong way...

I find myself comparing costs for almost everything with supplyhouse, so i might as well shop there. I can't see myself doing any worse than breaking even with exchange rates etc.

my issue is not with contractors - plenty of my neighbours seem happy to pay contractors and their overhead.

I just want a fair quote for the hardware, which is available to consumers is the US, and from multiple sources. (supplyhouse, pexuniverse, etc).
