Sushi Making Kit (or self made sushi "kit")

I made this post under Request a deal, but it was suggested to try this forum.

What is it?
Looking for a store that sells either a Sushi making kit or has the items to be able to put some stuff together to make a small kit as a gift. I'm not very knowledgeable about sushi, so if you have any suggestions what to put in a kit, that would be great. I was thinking the rolling mat, rice spoon and some various ingredients like nori, wasabi, sushi rice etc. I'm not sure what the cost is for these items, but I was thinking around $25 is what I'll limit it at.

Where you want to buy (online, retail store)?
Looking for a retail store around central Ottawa with bus access.

Hopefully you've got some good recommendations. Thanks for any help.

Is the Ottawa T&T convenient for you? There should be a Japanese food section that will have nori, wasabi and sushi rice. Then in their 'cooking utensils' aisle, they'll have rolling mats etc. You could probably do it for around $25.

Loblaws or Independent at Billings Bridge and also Superstore they have a "sushi station" in the store where they make sushi to go and salads and "asian food", but at the same area they sell rolling mats, rice, seasonings, ginger ect.
Not sure of the prices asI have never bought those items.
T&T is good, but by bus is is far-like near Merivale Rd Costco and I'm sure it is 1 hour there and 1 hour back.

Sushi Go and Go 4 Sushi- two stores downtown they sell everything to make sushi too- like special rice, vinegar, rolling mats.

Go 4 Sushi is at Minto place hotel- in the mall there, Sushi go they have 4 stores, one on bank, byward market, slater st?, merivale rd.

Yeah, I had a feeling that the T&T was probably out of the way. But their prices are pretty good.

Good call on the grocery stores, though. The time saved might be worth the extra couple of dollars.

The costco kit looks ok, but if you go to Sushi go www.sushigoexpress.ca

I'm sure it would cost $25 maybe $30 at most.
Not too sure you "really" need a sushi paddle, maybe adding some pickled plums or whatever pickled items people also put in sushi that might be nice too.
Sushi Go- they also sell a lot of little Japanese snacks like rice crackers, candy ect.
-Not really the best deal, but the packagings were nice.

Walmart also has a large asian food section, or South Keys does anyway- I've seen pocky, rice,vinegars-but have not looked for bamboo mats.

or maybe make a note of what Sushi Go sells and go to Loblaws- I also remember seeing that Japanese mayonaise at Sushi go the one that comes in the weird squeezy bottle.

Thanks a lot. I'll check out the grocery store to see what they have. Although, I find they the Independent in Billings has some pretty high prices due to their bus riding consumers that have no other choice for a grocery store. I read in my other thread that Zellers may have some stuff. I'll check that out as well and report back. T&T is a little far, so I may take a trip downtown to check out Sushi Go and Go 4 Sushi. Have you heard of Kowloon market or Waiku? I found some old info about them online that says they sell sushi stuff, but I couldn't find much about them. Kowloon is at 720 Somerset St. W and Waiku is apparently across from it.

Walmart is another good idea. I'll give it a try too.

Thanks to everyone else as well for your suggestions. I think I'll use the Costco kit as a last resort and try to put together something a little cheaper. T&T is a little far for me, but if all else fails... I'll haul myself over there.

Was at Go for Sushi at Minto place hotel mall today and looked at the suplies.
They have 200 piece seaweed sheets for $11.99- is that a good price?
Did not see any sushi mats or rice for sale.

For the packaging I really liked what Go For Sushi had (they had rice, tempura flakes, panko, rolling mats)- have only gone to the Glebe store and they are open till 9pm everyday even sunday.

-The inari sushi at r Sushi Go in the Glebe is really good- they put mushrooms and other vegetables in it and it has more taste.

Had sushi at Go for Sushi and it is ok- kind of "fast food sushi" inari is very plain- just rice and soy wrapper..kind of cheap though at $2 for 2pc.

Also the sushi supplies at Sushi go (or whatever the place in the Glebe at Fourth ave is), the packaging has that high end look and looks more like something you could give as a gift (not sure a 1kg bag or rice is worth $8 just for a nice packaging??)

I checked out places within walking distance and they included Zellers, Independent Grocer, C.A. Paradis and Grace in the Kitchen. Zellers did not have anything that I could find. Independent had a small tube of wasabi for about $4. Pretty slim pickings overall for sushi related items. C.A. Paradis has sushi knives, but given their cost it is not something you would typically include in a gift basket. Grace in the Kitchen had wasabi for about $5-6 and a pack of 5 seaweed sheets for $8. I've found everything in that store is overpriced.

I read about a couple places on Somerset St at the Ottawa Foodies site. The places that I ended up checking out were Kowloon Market (712 Somerset St. W) and Waiku. They are directly across the road from each other, so it wouldn't hurt to compare prices between the stores if you do go out there. I thought of going to T&T, but considering how far it was, I would have to pay whatever price they put. Whereas, there are a number of stores in close proximity on Somerset.

Waiku is smaller than Kowloon and is a kinda cramped. Prices are pretty similar, but you have more options at Kowloon.

These are just some of the prices that I wrote down and doesn't mean there isn't a more expensive or cheaper option available.
Waiku
Mat - 24x24cm - $1.59
- 30x45cm - $3.50
Rice Wine Vinegar - $2.99 (about 350 mL)
Nori - Roasted Seaweed - $2.59 for 10 sheets (7.5" x 8")
Yakinori - (still) Roasted Seaweed - $2.29 for 10 sheets (7.5" x 8")
There was a no name option of 100 sheets (7.5" x 8") for $14-15, so that 200 piece for $11.99 at Go for Sushi is a great price (dependent on the quality).
Sushi Rice - I forgot to check the price as I already bought some at Kowloon
Pickled ginger - $4.29 for a small jar. There was one that was $1.99 but it was really really pink. The extreme pink scared me, so I bought it at Kowloon where it was cheaper.
Kikkoman Sushi and Sashimi Soya Sauce - $3.49
Wasabi - small tube (50-60g) for about $3.50

Kowloon
Mat - 24x24cm - $1.19
Rice Wine Vinegar - $3.99 (about 600 mL)
Nori - Roasted Seaweed - $3.29 for 10 sheets (7.5" x 8")
Yakinori - (still) Roasted Seaweed - $2.49 for 10 sheets (7.5" x 8")
There were some other options for roasted seaweed, but I can't remember what they are.
Sushi Rice - $7.99 for 2.2kg/5lb but they had quite a few different sizes/varieties to choose from.
Pickled ginger - $2.99 for a small jar. The $4.29 from Waiku was $3.99
Kikkoman Sushi and Sashimi Soya Sauce - $4.59
Wasabi - They had powdered and tube format. "Jumbo" tube of Wasabi (80g) was $4.49. Some small containers of powdered wasabi were about $6 for 56g. And there was a massive bag (1 kg) of powdered wasabi for $9.99... there was no middle ground. I bought the mega package. It was the better deal by far and they are never going to run out of wasabi.
Chopsticks - $1.99 for 5 sets of nice looking wooden chopsticks. They had heavy plastic ones with about 10 sets in a package for $1.99
There were also some small square dishes that had a partition that would work well for a dipping tray for $0.99.

In the end, I spent about $40. I definitely could have gotten away with $25 for a gift set, but I bought the larger rice wine vinegar, multiple packs of seaweed, the monster wasabi bag, the sushi soya sauce (where I'm sure any type will do) and larger rice. So there are a number of things you could cut down on. You could also go more expensive as well.

The wasabi you can use for stuff other than sushi.
I have seen wasabit roasted peanuts and soy nuts- you could make your own.
Wasabi on chocolate-i know someone that sells that.
to make any dip spicy you could add wasabi.
