sushi rock... eglington/yonge - don't even take ur dogs there...

been a while since i had done a review, so.....

OK,so this place had won "THE SUN" paper's Best of Toronto Award back in 2002.. so lets give it the run down..

1. yuppish part of town
2. pretty decent selection of weirdly named rolls (raptor roll?)

I was there the past weekend for their Sushi Buffet..I called in advance to find out how much it was, and the gentleman told me it was $19.99 and for sashimi they served Salmon, RedSnapper and Tuna.. I asked, WHAT KIND OF TUNA, and he said RED TUNA.. for $20 i was there....

Well i arrive and on an empty stomach and an exceptionally cold day...... I receive the menu and i see:

Sushi Buffet: $22.99
Sashimi: Salmon, Red Snapper, Surf Clam, Crab

ok, so where is the Tuna and how come its $3 more expensive? I tell the waiter and he had no reason why someone that worked there would say that..... anyways, we were here, we were starving and we wanted food.

THE FEAST:
==============

Must have been a strange evening, no white tuna nigiri sushi AND they wern't willing to substitute anything for its absense. (great PR..... right)

We order, and for the 3 of us, we clearly wrote what we wanted and how many pcs of each.. rolls included... pcs of nigiri sushi included as well.

We wait..... and wait... and wait.. and the place was not at ALL exceptionally busy.... Finally our first plate of sashimi arrives..... and a roll accompanies it.. we take our take and enjoy the food.. but after its done, where was the rest of the tempura, and assorted nigiri sushi?
we just figured it was still being....... caught from the sea and we order our 2nd round.... we get our 2nd plate of sashimi, and our plate of short ribs and terryaki chicken comes next.. our nigiri sushi and sushi pizza doesn't make it......

a solid 20 mins pass and the waiter comes by and askes how everything is, and i ask him, if we have a backlog.. he asks the sushi chef, and he said NOTHING....... so we are surprised because they lost half our order and start ordering up a storm (in hopes that all the lost orders dont' come thru at the end when we are done and full)

we order some rolls and actually the selection is good and quality decent..... not overly padded with rice at all and generous fillings of slamon, salmon roe, crab, avacado and carrot.. we had one with tempura shrimp inside and creme cheeze as well, one was topped with smoked salmon, the other with just salmon.. they forgot another 2 we ordered..

Overall, we filled up on ~90 pcs of Salmon and ~60 pcs of red snapper sashimi as they seemed to forget the rest of the items we ordered.. we tried to get another sushi pizza out of them as the first one was surprisingly decent and not too greesy at all, but to no avail..

the nigiri sushi must have been afraid of our table becasuse we never saw it....the only tempura we had were in our rolls and the shrimp tempura orders never made it out of the kitchen either.

Considering their very selective take on their "many items" I would have to say that service was horrid. This place really must have been understaffed or something but i think the catch was this":

THE DRUNKEN STAFF:
=========================

after we were alarmed at the absence of an order backlog, we payed more attention to the "SUSHI SENSEI" behind the counter.. now at first we thought it was the lighting, but infact, the taller chef adorning a JOHN DEER trucker hat was generously chugging down bottles of ASHAI japanese beer????????? My brother had thought that this was EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL for any food establishment, much less a sushi bar.... later on in the evening, the shorter chef was having a ball and brought out to short shot glasses of SAKE to cheer to....

Anyways, we figured he ate half our food or just couldn't read our extremely legible printing because he could only see in a blurr.....

on the very minimal positive side.. even down to the 90th slice of salmon sashimi, each piece was of decent quality, and the cuts of the fish ok.. none overly fatty, and all lean fish.. and cold, but not frozen.. the red snapper so far had been good and not a hint of any of the stock being frozen at all..(ie, none of those retardely thin, flat slices i sometimes get at yangs, or even sushi hut - when i get these, i feel insulted...) the quality of the rolls were on par with some of the better places i had been to, BUT you may be in for a surprise because of the ambiguous names they have......

but i would expect this considering the time they took to prepare this food.... it was unreasonably long and we are by no means fast eaters....there were 2 chefs and this is not a large establishment.

OVERALL:
===============
In this day of competition, there are sushi places EVERYWHERE IN TORONTO... LITERALLY... i have had sushi rolled by high school kids and japanese sensai's boasting lenthy careers in the ART of making sushi.. carefully considering the quality of their sushi and sashimi.. the lack of nigiri sushi, and the selective forgetfullness plus the long waits between orders made for a FAR LESS THAN SATISFYING EXPERIENCE...

this place isn't bargin cheap either.. i think I would chance my next $25 sushi dinner elsewhere.....

the question i would ask you: How much would you tip a place like this? and what if the tip was already included in the bill?

Excellent review. You didn't just focus on the negatives and had the decency to commend them for their positive attributes also.

All in all, I agree with you that is terrible service/experience, but in relation to other sushi all you can eat that i've been to, I wouldn't say it's entirely out of line.

To date, I have not yet been to a sushi all you can eat that:

1. isn't slow regardless of capacity (empty or full house)
2. is accurate (forgets portions of your order)
3. cheap (smaller rolls/pieces)

My take on AYCE sushi? waste of time. I'd rather pay a lot more for decent sushi and good service.

Any other good Sushi places in the area? I was gonna checkout Sushi Rock because its so close to me, but maybe not anymore. I'm also sort of a noob when it comes to Sushi, what are some things to order?

is this hosu bistro?? i went to this place yesterday on Queen and John (i think they have 3 locations), it's not AYCE but it was pretty decent. i had 10 pieces of sashimi in a bento box and it was good. it costs 8 bucks as it was a special so pretty good value as well.

You guys should try going to Takara Sushi at St. Clair and Yonge (about a half block north on yonge across from Pharmaplus). On sundays its all you can eat and its pretty decent, around $12.99 give or take
