AT&T unlimited roaming plan - $140CAD/month - Keep or give up?

Hi everyone.

I currently have an unlimited roaming grandfathered plan with att which gives my unlimited data usage in any country without any speed caps. I got it 2 months ago from a friend. There's nothing like this in the world and although it is expensive if I give it up I will never get such a plan again and i wonder with the future being more digital if there are long term benefits in keeping such a plan. Theoretically I can use terabytes of data a month and I'm not suppose to hotspot as it is restricted on iPhone I can if I use an android, so an iPhone guy I would have to keep an android and a sim card opener nearby in case I ever did want to hotspot. Currently I'm using an s22+ for a few months but its not my vibe haha.

I am into the whole remote work nomad lifestyle although my company offers to let me work anywhere I just work from my bedroom at the moment so I don't take advantage of it really but I know in the future it would really be beneficial especially if i country hop or stay outside canada for extended periods of time. There's also the whole passport bros movement of people leaving the west to date women in other countries which I find enticing and something I want to try in the next few years (I'm 24 right now), so ideally I would be staying outside of Canada for months at a time perhaps columbia, Mexico etc

Wondering what you guys think. I was thinking of spreading 25,000 into some safe dividend stocks which would help cover the monthly cost of the plan and my capital would be relatively safe (stocks like Bell, Telus, or REITs).

Right now I am also using openphone $10usd/month for calling and texting in Canada but I heard voip.ms would be better if anyone can comment on that

I tried to negotiate any discounts with at&t but they wouldn't budge.

Well give me an example because from what I see data is pretty expensive when using 50 to 100gb a month in other countries... what if i wanted to stream? This things going buy fast especially in the carribean data is pretty expensive from what I see.

Are you 100% sure there is no fair usage policy? These kinda plans also have multiple clauses in them that majority of usage should be on home network.
Sounds almost unbelievable that there's a plan that would let you use unlimited full speed data while roaming. At the very least they would usually slow down your data speed to a crawl after certain GB are used.
I would double and triple check all the fine print. And after I did that I would call customer service and ask to email me another copy of plan rules.
I might sound negative but even at $140/month your provider would be losing money if you were to do what you describe (living for months at a time outside Canada and using 50-100GB a month) .

Caribbean is expensive, I will give you that. But if the cost is 300$ a month on the islands, it is still cheaper in the long run. Because the other 11 months of the year, you are paying 140$ per month when you can easily reduce the cost.

If I am paying a premium for data (data bucket), I would not squander it on a YouTube video or a streaming service.

The only way to justify spending 140$ on this data plan is if you use it as your primary internet at home which isn't practical

THe reality is that the Nomad lifestyle is a pipe dream, we humans tend to put roots down, maybe not immediately, but eventually. Case in point, I was born in a third world country, came to canada in my early 20's, got married, had a job, kids the whole shebang. Last year my responsibilities shrunk so much that I planned to spend at least 3 months in the country of my birth. Work in progress, but for me, right now Canada is the best place to be. Somebody please prove me wrong

Yes trust me I did all the research before I got the plan. Some guy on ebay was selling it and we exchanged infk and we became friends. Oroliginally he was selling it for 3000 usd or best offer but he gave it to me for 600 because he wanted me to have it.

What about the the opportunity cost of never having to worry about usage where ever you travel. Can't put a price on peace of mind

double check the fine print.
a couple of years before you go anywhere=at a minimum two x$1680/year plus $600us buying the grandfathered plan ouch!
you are paying $10US for current plan but thinking of investing 25,000 to minimize cost?
maybe consider selling plan and using $140 monthly for current fun activities ? or invest the 140 monthly and when you do finally go you will have enough to pay for any plan wherever you land.

Trust me there is no fair usage policy. It even shows "Data international" as unlimited on the account at my at&t account. They give a very detailed hourly breakdown of how much data you used and what countrt on the bill

Hotspot is disabled on iPhone but works on androids

I don’t know how they justify advertising unlimited internet 5g and at the same time say there is a fair usage policy where they decide what’s fair….

Still, $140 per month will be massively overpaying for most Europe and Asia, where data is cheap. It may be worth it if you spend many months every year in those less developed countries with high data costs (but even there, if you stay put for 1-2 months at a time, it may be cheaper to get DSL internet and your own wifi).

$140 per month is a bit much unless you use it as your primary internet access. Even then, there are some places like Singapore where one can get 100GB for $10.

I was thinking of putting 15k into riocan or smartcenters reit or Bell Canada/Telus stock. That would bring my cost down to around 70 a month factoring in dividends in my tfsa.

Note I can also pause my services for 10usd a month for up to 6 months and only twice a year. There is nothing like this plan on the entire planet. Then the question really is should I just keep it paused for $10 a month indefinitely until I travel?

okay so really it depends on weather or not you want to keep this number. Esp during your travels.

There is huge advantage traveling loads and carrying the same number every where you go. even to not worry about having to get a new provider depending on where you go is huge.

BUt like others have mentioned, you can get data only plans aborad for loads cheaper. maybe couple that with a voip line and you should be good to go.

But all the above is second tier. having to use direct voice calls will always be superior.

if this is your primary internet, even at home - then it isn't so bad actually.....

You mentioned you'd have to pop in your sim into a hotspot device or Android phone to hotspot but just grab a cheapie device to hotspot

A decent home internet would cost you ~$70; so essentially you'd be paying $70 more for a cell plan which isn't outrageous and you get to keep the same # while you travel.

The question is will you be traveling a lot in the near future - if so, then I think it is worth it since you don't need to worry about getting data aboard and just use it wherever you go....even if you are aboard working, just hotspot while working aboard so you'll never have to worry about getting internet where you live...

Will the cost / month every go up? Any previous price increases?

Nothing at the moment

The plan comes with 39.99 voice plan with a US number and a 69.99 data unlimited addon. I have no use for the voice plan since i am not a usa citizen. I rarely call people as it is mostly I communicate on whatsapp and Facebook etc. The data plan went up by $5 few years ago I think. I'm thinking of using textnow and locking in a number but I hate the ads so I'm using openphone right now for $10/month

I suggest you use your 15k to grow your wealth and not squander it on this plan

Assuming you get a service like the Rogers unlimited plan. You will pay ~70$ for 5G data. It is unlimited in the sense that you reach your data limit, it will slow down to 512k

Rogers offers ROAM Like Home for 15$ a day in countries outside of North America. Up to a maximum of 20 days. The most you will ever pay is 300$ CAD for an extended stay. That is still better than paying 140$ every month

https://www.rogers.com/mobility/roaming

No point in discussing this, sounds like you already made up your mind and just want everyone to reassure you.

I am sure you will wake up some day and realize this was not practical. The guy that sold it to you for 600$ figured it out. Until then, enjoy your plan

LOL. OP is now trying to unload this $140/mth plan in the BST, but didn't list an actual selling price which is breaking BST posting rules. Doubt anyone on here will buy it for anywhere near the $600 the OP paid to get the plan. The plan includes 1200 minutes and doesn't even include any SMS (pay per use).
