Tangerine 2% cash back - Utility

I made a per-authorized payment to my utility and the monthly charges are paid by Tangerine cash back MC. It shows only 0.5% cash back. Shouldn't I receive 2% like all other per-authorized monthly bills?

How do you pay utility bills using a credit card?

I know we can do it via Canadian Tire Mastercard, but I don't know how other cards work, especially Tangerine.

I've noticed that not all pre-authorized monthly payments will be classified as the "pre-authorized automated payment" by Tangerine. That being said, it can sometimes take ~2 billing cycles for something to be "registered" as a pre-authorized monthly payment. I normally leave something on my Tangerine card for ~3 billing cycles and if it doesn't go from 0.5% to 2%, I'll switch it to another card which will give me 1% on all purchases (or another credit card).

Tangerine won't be of any help if you contact them for clarification or for correction. Even if one month you received the 2% cashback for it being an automated pre-authorized payment and the following month, it doesn't get classified as this and you only get 0.5% cashback, they won't help you. They will say that the company didn't enter it properly for that month and to contact the company. They will give the example such as "you can go to a store and purchase something at the same price every month on the same day each month and that doesn't make it an automated pre-authorized charge/payment; that charge shows up as the company doing it as a single charge". I've had my monthly public transit pass give me 2% and then in a single month, it appeared as 0.5% and when I called them to ask about it, they told me that it was how the transit company entered that charge on that month and to contact the transit company.

Usually if the merchant processes it as a recurring transaction, then you'll earn the rewards for pre-authorized payment.

Thanks for the info.
I switched a few "Recurring payments" to Tangerine MC starting this Billing Cycle and 1 payment only received 0.5% CB. I'll wait for the next Billing cycle to see if it qualifies for the 2%CB.

Tangerine is hit or miss with these rewards. I was getting my 2% back on monthly pre-authorized Fido bills, but it just randonly changed to 0.5% one day. No explanation.
I ended up switching that one to my Rogers MC.

It's a 2-way street, however, as I found a few instances where I was getting 2% at stores where I did not expect it.

I've had Tangerine give me 2% for my monthly pre-authorized transit pass purchase for a few months and then one month, they gave me 0.5% and then it returned to 2%. Even calling Tangerine to show them that all past re-occurring charges by the transit company were 2% and the next charge (after the 0.5%) was also 2%, they wouldn't change the 0.5% charge.

I've gone to restaurants that I have as another of my 2% categories and they would give me 0.5%. When I called to question them about it especially when the description of the credit card purchase shows "Restaurant", they told that that this description doesn't mean anything as it can be changed. As mentioned, they won't offer any help for any discrepancy in cashback as long as they gave you 0.5%, it isn't there problem and they will blame the merchant.
